A major new interpretation of Vergil's epic poem as a struggle between two incompatible versions of the Homeric hero This compelling book offers an entirely new way of understanding the Aeneid. Many scholars regard Vergil's poem as an attempt to combine Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey into a single epic. Joseph Farrell challenges this view, revealing how the Aeneid stages an epic contest to determine which kind of story it will tell—and what kind of hero Aeneas will be. Farrell shows how this contest is provoked by the transgressive goddess Juno, who challenges Vergil for the soul of his hero and poem. Her goal is to transform the poem into an Iliad of continuous Trojan persecution instead of an Odyssey of successful homecoming. Farrell discusses how ancient critics considered the flexible Odysseus the model of a good leader but censured the hero of the Iliad, the intransigent Achilles, as a bad one. He describes how the battle over which kind of leader Aeneas will prove to be continues throughout the poem, and explores how this struggle reflects in very different ways on the ethical legitimacy of Rome’s emperor, Caesar Augustus. By reframing the Aeneid in this way, Farrell demonstrates how the purpose of the poem is to confront the reader with an urgent decision between incompatible possibilities and provoke uncertainty about whether the poem is a celebration of Augustus or a melancholy reflection on the discontents of a troubled age.

Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 v.Chr.) behoort met zijn gedichten Herderszangen, Boerenbedrijf en Aeneis tot de top van de westerse literatuur, in het gezelschap van Homerus (eind 9e/8e eeuw v.Chr.) en Dante (rond 1300).Kort voor zijn dood vroeg Vergilius zijn vrienden Varius en Tucca om zijn nog onvoltooide Aeneis te verbranden. Tevergeefs, het epos is door hen kort na zijn dood op verzoek van keizer Augustus uitgegeven en wordt evenals de twee andere gedichten sindsdien tot op heden onafgebroken gelezen en bestudeerd. In 2025 is de Aeneis wederom het onderwerp van het Centraal Examen Latijn. Vergilius stond dicht bij de politieke en sociale chaos na de moord op Caesar (44 v.Chr.) en zag van nabij de ideologische veranderingen van de Republiek naar het Principaat van keizer Octavianus Augustus (vanaf 27 v.Chr.). Vooral in de Aeneis, over de lotgevallen van de Trojaan Aeneas in de 11e eeuw v.Chr., wordt systematisch vooruit gewezen naar de verre toekomst van het Principaat van Augustus, de toekomst die inmiddels voor hemzelf en voor zijn (lezers)publiek in het actuele heden was voltooid. Deze bundel bevat historische, archeologische en literaire beschouwingen over een aantal sleutelpassages in Vergilius’ gedichten. Zo blijkt de giftige damp uit Lacus Avernus werkelijkheid te zijn geweest, heeft Vergilius kennis van de beroemde fresco’s van Polygnotus in Delphi, en blijkt de Wandeling van Aeneas in het nog lang niet-bestaande Rome een lofzang te zijn op de bouwactiviteiten van Augustus. Ruim aandacht wordt ook besteed aan de vele intertekstuele verwijzingen naar vooral Homerus, Hesiodus, Catullus en Lucretius. Het herkennen van ‘imitatio’ van deze bewonderde voorgangers helpt ons de betekenis van Vergilius’ teksten beter te begrijpen. Na ruim 2000 jaar hebben Vergilius’ gedichten nog niets van hun roem verloren. Om de lectuur voor een groter publiek mogelijk maken is in deze bundel naast de ori ginele Griekse en Latijnse teksten ook steeds de vertaling daarvan opgenomen.
