In het Indisch Lexicon zijn bijna 19.000 Indische woorden en begrippen, zoals ze in de Nederlandse taal vanaf ongeveer 1600 gebruikt zijn, vastgelegd, omschreven en in hun context geplaatst. Van ieder woord is de betekenis gegeven op basis van reeds bestaande Indonesische, Maleise, Javaanse, Soendanese en Nederlandse woordenboeken. Niet alleen enkelvoudige woorden maar ook samenstellingen en spellingsvarianten zijn opgenomen, met citaten uit de bron waarin het betreffende woord voorkomt. Dit lexicon is een belangrijk naslagwerk om de Indische woorden en uitdrukkingen die langzaam uit ons collectieve geheugen verdwijnen, vast te houden, weer tot leven te wekken en te verklaren binnen hun semantische en culturele context. Let op: bijgaande CD functioneert niet op Windows Vista en opvolgende besturingssystemen.

`Wie ben je? `Een man, antwoordde ik. `Zoals ik me die herinner. Met deze woorden begint het titelverhaal van Cicerone, een van de dertien stukken in deze verhalenbundel van Atte Jongstra. Je zou de verhalen in Cicerone realistisch kunnen noemen. De nadruk ligt op de werkelijkheid, zij het de werkelijkheid van het geheugen. Veel van de personages in Cicerone voeren de lezer door hun herinneringen, een bonte wereld van eigen indrukken en gedachten, maar ook door herinneringen aan de gedachten van anderen. Vaak zijn die nauwelijks meer van elkaar te onderscheiden. De verhalen in Cicerone ontstaan terwijl ze verteld worden. De uiteenlopende vertellers een eenzame encyclopedist, een plattelandspostbode, een etnograaf, een handschoenenliefhebber, een belaagde geadresseerde, een verstrooide visser en een hartstochtelijk luisteraar zijn ervan overtuigd dat hun verhaal op z n minst één waarschijnlijke versie van de realiteit belichaamt. Cicerone sluit in thematiek aan op Jongstra s roman Groente, die eveneens bestond uit memoires. Het is een tweede stap in wat lijkt uit te groeien tot een meeslepende prozacyclus, waarin de schrijver zich ontpopt als een kleurrijke en welsprekende geheugenkunstenaar. Atte Jongstra (Terwispel, 1956) publiceerde eerder de studie De multatulianen en de romans De psychologie van de zwavel (1989, bekroond met de Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs en genomineerd voor de AKO Literatuurprijs) en Groente (1991).
