Dit boekje is uw initiatie tot complotdenker. Een bezoekje aan de hersengarage; het wil u op een andere manier leren kijken naar de wereld. Het heeft niet als doel het uitputtend analyseren van de diverse complotten, dat kunt u na lezing zelf. Het is geen vis maar een hengel. We weten inmiddels allemaal uit de oeverloze discussies over Corona-wetenschap dat als je iets per se wilt ‘debunken’ (ontkrachten) dat vrijwel altijd mogelijk is door het in een ander paradigma te plaatsen. In plaats daarvan gaan we leren hoe we zelf complotten kunnen ontdekken en complottheorieën kunnen opstellen. Wie het concept ‘complotdenken’ oorspronkelijk heeft benoemd, is natuurlijk niet te achterhalen. Het wijdverbreide gebruik van de toevoeging ‘conspiracy theorist’ (complotdenker) is het echter ironisch genoeg zelf het resultaat van een complot. Destijds liet de CIA de term gebruiken door ‘bevriende media en politici’ (daar gaan we al) om aanhangers van alternatieve JFK-theorieën weg te zetten als ‘gekkies’. Het woord is uitgegroeid tot een middel om iedereen die niet klakkeloos het officiële verhaal gelooft, ongeloofwaardig te maken. Nog steeds is het één van de meest gebruikte niet-inhoudelijke argumenten in een discussie waar een partij een hypothese opwerpt die het geliefde wereldbeeld van de andere partij net iets te veel en net iets te zorgvuldig verstoort. ‘Complotdenker’ is een frame, nooit een argument. De ultieme ironie hierbij is dat mensen die anderen uitschelden voor ‘complotdenker’ dus zelf het slachtoffer zijn van een complot.

In Once Upon an Algorithm, Martin Erwig explains computation as something that takes place beyond electronic computers, and computer science as the study of systematic problem solving. Erwig points out that many daily activities involve problem solving. Getting up in the morning, for example: You get up, take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast. This simple daily routine solves a recurring problem through a series of well-defined steps. In computer science, such a routine is called an algorithm.
