Het slot ontvlucht brengt de verschillende vormen in kaart die de Bildungsroman aanneemt wanneer die de subjectwording van een vrouwelijk hoofdpersonage thematiseert. Met analyses van Sara Burgerhart (1782), Dood van een non (1961), De wetten (1991) en De vermaledijde vaders (1985) wordt de evolutie getoond van de portrettering van de vrouwelijke ontwikkeling in de moderne Nederlandse literatuur. Geïnspireerd door de discussie over de moeizame vertaling van de Bildungsidee in een literaire vorm, vertrekken de analyses vanuit de tegenstrijdige stemmen in de receptie rond de geloofwaardigheid van het romaneinde.
