Maar hij kan niet altijd de vader van de jongen spelen, hij moet een moeder voor hem zoeken. Hoewel iedere immigrant in dit land elk spoor van herinnering is kwijtgeraakt, is Simon er heilig van overtuigd dat hij Davids moeder zal herkennen als hij haar tegenkomt. En inderdaad: tijdens een wandeling ziet hij die vrouw en weet haar te overtuigen dat zij de moederrol voor David op zich moet nemen. Ze heeft het al snel door: dit is een slimme, wat dromerige jongen met soms rare ideeën en gedachten over deze wereld, dit is een heel bijzonder kind. Haar kind, nu. Maar op school wantrouwen de autoriteiten de eigenzinnige jongen en willen ze hem naar een strenge kostschool sturen, om te leren en nog eens leren: tellen, schrijven en vooral geen verzonnen onzin vertellen. Een botsing met de moeder is onvermijdelijk. Zij vraagt Simon hen naar de bergen in het noorden te brengen, de grens over. Een nieuwe vlucht begint.
