Se poate comunica şi e necesar sǎ se comunice cu valorile literaturii universale, pǎstrandu-se o perspectivǎ istoricǎ, citindu-l pe Sofocle ca pe contemporanul lui Pericle. Dar, am început sǎ înţelegem, spre deosebire de secolul trecut, istoricist, cǎ tot atât de necesarǎ, ba poate chiar mai fecundǎ, e o comunicare cu trecutul, adoptându-se o perspectivǎ actualizatoare, citindu-l pe Sofocle ca pe contemporanul nostru. Dincolo de aceastǎ perspectivǎ care, în cele din urmǎ, e şi ea oarecum istoricistǎ, doar cǎ istoria e localizatǎ în actualitate, se deschide o perspectivǎ a sincroniei literare care dispune sǎ-l citim pe Sofocle ca pe contemporanul nimǎnui ori al tuturor, ca pe un martor al esenţialitǎţii umane şi nu numai al unei existenţe istoric cantonate. Încercare ambiţioasǎ, ce nǎzuieşte sǎ derelativizeze valorile literar-artistice, pǎstrând totodatǎ conştiinţa unei relativitǎţi a formelor şi figurilor pe care o hermeneuticǎ a textelor se cuvine sǎ o punǎ în luminǎ. Relativitate impusǎ chiar de prezenţa autorului, a cititorului interpret, a scriitorului şi hermeneutului în comentariile sale. În cartea aceasta a atâtor cǎrţi, scribul interpret apare în textele sale ca şi pictorul ce se zugrǎveşte pictând în propriile sale tablouri. Sǎ-i fie iertatǎ aceastǎ ultimǎ deşertǎciune. / Nicolae Balotă

Scott Fitzgerald said the novel made him feel a “hollow, cheerful pain” and remarked: “The book makes me feel appallingly naked.” To Stephan Zweig Ulysses is not just a novel, to him it is a “witches Sabbath of the spirit, a gigantic ‘Capriccio’, a phenomenal cerebral Walpurgisnacht. [...] Something evil is its root.” Ulysses is not a novel, it’s an epic. Inspired by Homer’s adventures of the voyager hero Odysseus Joyce expanded a short story to almost a thousand pages and created a one-of-a-kind portrait of Dublin, at the start of the twentieth century. Hence, Ulysses does not actually mirror the ancient epic, neither does it recall Irish history as presented in a history book, solely in terms of social and political events and changes....
