Queda así la memoria faenando, como un barco de pesca, entre las dos aguas faulknerianas: entre la pena y la nada. Este es un libro de memorias, es decir, un cuento que recuenta y echa cuentas, y no siempre el juego de sumas y restas es cosa de las matemáticas. Quien suma y sigue es el destino y -advierte Luciano Lamberti- «el destino es el encuentro del individuo con su clase». Por eso, porque uno es uno con los otros, entre la pena y la nada el autor rechaza el dilema y opta por navegar por su cuenta y riesgo sin olvidar que la memoria individual es espejo de un trayecto colectivo: la segunda mitad del siglo XX. La clase como geología de los paisajes humanos, íntimos, políticos y morales (la caza de brujas, el México de Rulfo, los hispanistas, Marcuse, los panteras negras, Angela Davis, los chicanos, el tardofranquismo, las izquierdas de Euskadi). La memoria es un arma cargada de futuro, escribió (o no) Gabriel Celaya, y razón no lo falta: lo importante no es el retroceso de la culata sino el objetivo al que se apunta y se dispara. Que vivir merece la pena por más que la vida esté llena de trampas, engaños, hipotecas y autoengaños. Que sí, que quizá el hombre es una pasión inútil, pero en algún lugar se siente libre y esa libertad nos hace y nos deshace. Eso parece querer contar este libro. Y acierta en la diana.
