This edited collection gives voice to neglected public intellectuals in the arts, humanities, and journalism in South Africa who gave voice and presence to those who have been marginalized and silenced in South African history Edward Said described a public intellectual as someone who uses accessible language to address a designated public on matters of social and political significance. The essays in Public Intellectuals in South Africa apply this interpretive prism and activist principle to a South African context and tell the stories of well-known figures as well as some that have been mostly forgotten. They include Magema Fuze, John Dube, Aggrey Klaaste, Mewa Ramgobin and Koos Roets, alongside marginalized figures such as Elijah Makiwane, Mandisi Sindo, William Pretorius and Dr Thomas Duncan Greenlees. The essays capture the thoughts and opinions of these historical figures, who the contributors argue are public intellectuals who spoke out against the corruption of power, promoted a progressive politics that challenged the colonial project and its legacies, and encouraged a sustained dissent of the political status quo. Sentences may pertain to states or processes or events. They may express duration, frequency, habituality, and many other forms of temporality. How do they do this? It is the aspectual properties of sentences in natural languages which allow the user to express a temporal structure, and Henk Verkuyl presents a unified formal system to account for them. He explains aspectuality in terms of the opposition between terminative aspect and durative aspect, and describes the way in which terminative aspect is compositionally formed on the basis of semantic information expressed by different syntactic elements, in particular the verb and its arguments. The aim is to determine which semantic conditions make a sentence terminative; but at least ten different forms of durative aspectuality are also treated. All are drawn into a theory which can account for both terminative and durative aspectuality together. A Theory of Aspectuality draws together into a coherent whole the author's thinking on the subject over the last twenty years, and will interest all those working on aspect and the semantics of noun phrases. It promises to be a major new contribution to our understanding of the subject.

De westerse grootlandbouwondernemingen die aan het eind van de vorige eeuw in Sumatra's Oostkust ontstonden werden gekenmerkt door de inzet op grote schaal van Chinese en Javaanse contractkoelies, die als dwangarbeiders vastzaten aan hun plantages. De advocaat Van den Brand vestigde in een geruchtmakende brochure die in 1902 verscheen--in dit boek in facsimile opgenomen--de aandacht op de wrede behandeling waaraan zij blootstonden. Onder politieke druk liet minister van koloniën Idenburg een onderzoek instellen. De rapportage hierover--in zijn geheel opgenomen--bevestigde de misstanden. De minister hield het rapport geheim. Tegen de ergste uitwassen werden maatregelen genomen. Het nauwe samenspel van koloniale bestuurders en kapitalistische ondernemers, zo kenmerkend voor de toenmalige koloniale ontwikkelingspolitiek, ook elders in koloniaal Azië, bleef ook daarna in stand. De auteur beschrijft en verklaart het ontstaan van de plantagesamenleving en daarna, geïllustreerd met vele voorbeelden, de barre omstandigheden waaronder de contractkoelies moesten werken en leven. Tot slot worden de reacties in publieke opinie, parlement en overheid op Van den Brands aanklacht samengevat. De verschijning van dit boek in 1987 trok grote aandacht en leidde tot een felle polemiek over de aard van het Nederlandse koloniale bestuur. In deze derde druk wordt in een nieuw voorwoord uitgebreid ingegaan op die discussie. In de tekst zijn een groot aantal nieuwe bronnen en gegevens verwerkt. Daardoor kan deze studie met nog meer recht gelden als standaardwerk over dit onderwerp.
