A sweeping history of Latin American republicanism in the nineteenth century By the 1820s, after three centuries under imperial rule, the former Spanish territories of Latin America had shaken off their colonial bonds and founded independent republics. In committing themselves to republicanism, they embarked on a political experiment of an unprecedented scale outside the newly formed United States. In this book, Hilda Sabato provides a sweeping history of republicanism in nineteenth-century Latin America, one that spans the entire region and places the Spanish American experience within a broader global perspective. Challenging the conventional view of Latin America as a case of failed modernization, Sabato shows how republican experiments differed across the region yet were all based on the radical notion of popular sovereignty--the idea that legitimate authority lies with the people. As in other parts of the world, the transition from colonies to independent states was complex, uncertain, and rife with conflict. Yet the republican order in Spanish America endured, crossing borders and traversing distinct geographies and cultures. Sabato shifts the focus from rulers and elites to ordinary citizens and traces the emergence of new institutions and practices that shaped a vigorous and inclusive political life. American Civil Wars takes readers beyond the battlefields and sectional divides of the U.S. Civil War to view the conflict from outside the national arena of the United States. Este estudio exploratorio y pionero se propuso comprender ¿cómo actuó el ejército colombiano durante el período en el cual el conflicto armado interno se recrudeció? ¿Estas experiencias pueden aportar a la verdad que se está construyendo en este país?. La población objetivo fueron los oficiales del ejército colombiano que estaban en servicio activo en la temporalidad de estudio (1995-1998). La investigación esta compuesta por cuatro partes: la primera parte, La violencia y los inicios del Conflicto Armado Interno, hace una revisión cronológica del conflicto en Colombia. En la segunda parte, Lo político, lo sociológico, los imaginarios, presenta la posición de la fuerza pública dentro de la estructura del Estado, la condición sociológica de la institución militar, los imaginarios, las representaciones y las prácticas. La tercera, Desarrollo y resultados de la investigación, hace el recuento de las normas existentes para el funcionamiento del ejército colombiano entre 1995 y 1998, analiza las representaciones y los imaginarios de los oficiales, el contexto del conflicto armado interno y las prácticas de los oficiales respecto a las normas a la luz de los casos seleccionados. La cuarta parte son las conclusiones.

Aunque no fueron delegatarios, los militares hicieron parte de la Asamblea. El 12 de mayo de 1951 cerca de un millar de hombres desfilaron en la Plaza de Bolívar de Bogotá, prestos a dirigirse a la mayor aventura de sus vidas. Admirados por unos y cuestionados por otros, partieron hacia la península de Corea, donde se disputaba una guerra intestina que involucraba los intereses de las grandes potencias mundiales. Tres años y cientos de muertos después, regresaron a Colombia. La mayoría eran soldados rasos, y no sabían muy bien qué vendría después para ellos. El soldado raso suele ser el último en ser mencionado, pese a que constituyen casi dos tercios de los combatientes. En torno a ellos se han construido diferentes relatos: algunos los comparan con héroes míticos, otros los llaman carne de cañón. La mayoría de ellos pasan desapercibidos. La manera en que se narra su participación no solo refleja la forma de pensar de una sociedad, sino también las disputas que se dan dentro de ella para consolidar un relato histórico. Entre 1951 y 1954, 3000 soldados rasos colombianos fueron enviados a la guerra de Corea. La forma en que se relató la participación de Colombia en ese conflicto permite comprender cómo una sociedad produce la historia y también descubrir las estrategias narrativas de estos sectores subalternos que les permiten dejar de ser simples objetos de la historia para convertirse en sujetos activos de ella.

La mayoría de las tropas colombianas que mandaron a la frontera se perdieron en la selva. Los ejércitos enemigos no se encontraron nunca. Unos refugiados alemanes de la Primera Guerra Mundial, que fundaron Avianca, se pusieron al servicio del gobierno y se fueron a la guerra con sus aviones de papel de aluminio. Uno de ellos cayó en plena selva y las tambochas -hormigas venenosas de cabeza roja-le comieron las piernas: yo lo conocí más tarde, llevando sus condecoraciones en silla de ruedas. Los aviadores alemanes al servicio de Colombia bombardearon con cocos una procesión de Corpus Christi en una aldea fronteriza del Perú. Un militar colombiano cayó herido en una escaramuza, y aquello fue como una lotería para el gobierno: llevaron al herido por todo el país, como una prueba de la crueldad de Sánchez Cerro, y tanto lo llevaron y lo trajeron, que al pobre hombre, herido en un tobillo, se le gangrenó la pierna y murió. Tengo dos mil anécdotas como estas. Si tú investigas la historia del lado del Perú y yo la investigo del lado de Colombia, te aseguro que escribimos el libro más delirante, increíble y aparatoso que se pueda concebir.
