This volume contains a selection of essays presented at the international conference of Cultural Crises in Art and Literature, held in Groningen in November 2002, in special sessions concerning modern Dutch literature. The recent decennia have shown a gradual transition in Netherlandic Studies towards new scopes: a contextual orientation of literature and the reception of 'Theory'. The contributions to this volume touch upon the theme of cultural crises from the perspective of these frameworks, approaching topics like the interrelation of literary representation and historical and medical discourse concerning the obsession by dirt, contamination, and dust; the impact of nationalism and humanism (in the political field) on literary education; the decline of modernism, resulting in the changing position of women authors, the rise of children's literature and the reassessment of 'low' genres like melodrama. A brief outline of the development of the study of modern Dutch literature opens this volume, the presentation of a general theoretical and methodological framework for conceptualizing the notion of cultural crisis concludes it.

In the past few decades there has been a growing interest and debate amongst historians of education surrounding issues of visuality, materiality, spatiality, transfer, and circulation. This collection of essays – with its focus on the interaction between ideas, images, objects, and/or spaces that contain an educational dimension – is a contribution to this ongoing debate. The contributors address how meaning is created, conveyed, and transformed through multiple modes of communication, representation, and interaction; through movement across spaces; through media and technologies; and through collective memory- and identity-making. The collection demonstrates that meaning is mobilized through ‘multimodality’, ‘translocation’, ‘technology’, and ‘heritage’, and that it assumes different qualities which need to be reflected upon in the history of education in particular and in education research in general. This book was originally published as a special issue of Paedagogica Historica.

Wanneer je oudere mensen vraagt naar de jeugdboeken die hen zijn bijgebleven, dan is de kans groot dat ze Arendsoog noemen, Pim Pandoer of – zeker als ze katholiek zijn opgevoed – Puk en Muk. Jongere generaties kennen Arendsoog vaak ook nog, maar zijn toch meer bekend met de Griezelbus-verhalen van Paul van Loon, de Maan-Roos-Vis-boekjes of de tijdschriften Okki en Taptoe. Al deze titels werden of worden op de markt gebracht door de Tilburgse uitgeverij Zwijsen of het Bossche Malmberg. Beide uitgeverijen bestaan al meer dan 125 jaar. Ze begonnen als specifiek katholieke uitgeverijen, maar ontwikkelden zich gaandeweg tot toonaangevende uitgeverijen voor de hele Nederlandse jeugdboekenmarkt. In deze uitgave blikt auteur Karen Ghonem-Woets terug op de titels die in de loop der jaren bij Zwijsen en Malmberg verschenen. Zij onderzoekt vragen als: Wat voor relatie is er tussen hun school- en hun jeugdboeken en hoe kwam in de jaren ’20 en ’30 – de tijd van het Rijke Roomsche Leven – het katholieke karakter tot uitdrukking in de samenstelling van de fondsen van beide uitgeverijen. Gradually, they can become the building blocks of a belief system, and determine people's conduct and worldview. All the elementary questions are dealt with from different perspectives: who makes the crop circles? What do the farmers think of them? How are the crop circles made and to what purpose? What positions do journalists take? Are there any messages to be found in crop circles, and if so, how can they be decoded? What kind of research do the cereologists perform in the field? If people believe in supernatural or extraterrestrial interference, what else do they believe in? Why do the croppies and cereologists think they are right, and what arguments do sceptics have to think them wrong? The author draws comparisons between the phenomenon in Britain and the Netherlands. The book also contains a brief survey into the acclaimed ancient history of crop circles. Although it is not the objective of the book to determine the absolute truth about crop circles, in the end the readers will be provided with all the pros and cons in the debate to make up their own mind.
