Music was central to the medieval church's public worship: it was the essential medium of the Mass and the Divine Office. In this new critical edition, T. J. H. McCarthy presents the Latin text and the first English translation of Aribo's musical treatise, De musica and Sententiae. Written between 1070 and 1078, it is concerned with the workings of the liturgical music that Aribo and his contemporaries called Gregorian chant, and builds off of and responds to several contemporary treatises by Abbot Bern of Reichenau and his pupil Herman, Abbot William of Hirsau, Frutolf of Michelsberg, and Theoger of Metz. In the first new edition of the treatise in over sixty years, McCarthy addresses not only new approaches to the study of music history but newly discovered manuscripts of the treatise, paying careful attention to the diagrams that are integral to the coherence of the treatise.

Since the days in the early twentieth century when the study of pre-Reformation English music first became a serious endeavour, a conceptual gap has separated the scholarship on English and continental music of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The teaching which has informed generations of students in influential textbooks and articles characterizes the musical life of England at this period through a language of separation and conservatism, asserting that English musicians were largely unaware of, and unaffected by, foreign practices after the mid-fifteenth century. The available historical evidence, nevertheless, contradicts a facile isolationist exposition of musical practice in early Tudor England. The increasing appearance of typically continental stylistic traits in mid-sixteenth-century English music represents not an arbitrary and unexpected shift of compositional approach, but rather a development prefaced by decades of documentable historical interactions. Theodor Dumitrescu treats the matter of musical relations between England and continental Europe during the first decades of the Tudor reign (c.1485-1530), by exploring a variety of historical, social, biographical, repertorial and intellectual links. In the first major study devoted to this topic, a wealth of documentary references scattered in primary and secondary sources receives a long-awaited collation and investigation, revealing the central role of the first Tudor monarchs in internationalizing the royal musical establishment and setting an example of considerable import for more widespread English artistic developments. By bringing together the evidence concerning Anglo-continental musical relations for the first time, along with new documents and interpretations concerning musicians, music manuscripts and theory sources, the investigation paves the way for a new evaluation of English musical styles in the first half of the sixteenth century.

Gaspar Stoquerus?s treatise, De musica verbali (ca. 1570), is the only Renaissance treatise as yet discovered that is devoted entirely to the problem of text placement in vocal polyphony. Salient portions of Stoquerus?s treatise were first discussed in 1961 by Edward E. Lowinsky, and a more detailed synthesis of Stoquerus?s treatise is contained in one chapter of Don Harran?s Word-Tone Relations in Musical Thought from Antiquity to the Seventeenth Century (1986). The present volume of Greek and Latin Music Theory offers the first critical edition of Stoquerus?s entire treatise, proceeded by an extensive introduction and accompanied by a translation and annotations facing the Latin text. Indexes of terms, names, and subjects are also included. The critical edition of the text provides a precise reading and comprehension of its contents, while the translation enables readers to examine more closely the contents of the entire treatise, especially Stoquerus?s contextual arguments justifying his subject in general and his fifteen rules for text placement in particular. The introduction and annotations reveal Stoquerus?s immersion in his historical milieu as a scholar, humanist, and pedagogue. As a pedagogue in particular, Stoquerus is deeply immersed in the scholastic method of argumentation and advances his thought with precision and logic, culminating in his closely reasoned set of fifteen rules for text placement and a simplification of the Guidonian method of solmization already in progress in Renaissance choir-instruction books. This volume offers the first critical edition of Stoquerus?s entire treatise, the only Renaissance treatise as yet discovered that is devoted entirely to the problem of text placement in vocal polyphony. The Newberry Library in Chicago possesses one of the most distinguished collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscript books in North America. Martha Feldman's exploration of sixteenth-century Venetian madrigals centers on the importance to the Venetians of Ciceronian rhetorical norms, which emphasized decorum through adherence to distinct stylistic levels.
