One of the least understood of Napoleon's corps were the four regiments of Gardes d'honneur, raised in 1813 during the frantic rebuilding of the French cavalry after the huge losses in Russia. Recruited from the leading social classes, uniformed and equipped at their own expense, and accompanied by servants to take care of such unpleasant chores as stable duty, these men were promised commissions as officers after a year's service in the ranks. Though spectacularly unready for combat upon their arrival with the army, the Guards of Honour would gain skill and confidence while serving alongside the élite cavalry of the Imperial Guard in the campaigns of Saxony and France, 1813-14, and distinguished themselves in battle at Hanau and Rheims. The story of their organisation, uniforms and service is researched from rare archives and memoirs, and illustrated with portraits, surviving uniform items, and meticulous colour plates.

The editors of the seventh volume of Acta Historiae Neerlandicae have followed the same lines as those adopted for its predecessor. Studies have again been selected which throw light on the history of the Low Countries, the choice again being directed to subjects likely to be of interest to foreign scholars lacking knowledge of the Dutch language. For this reason articles fairly general in scope have been chosen: studies of local interest or concerned with matters of detail have not been included. In this volume a wide diversity of topics is treated. Included are studies in the economic and social history of the later Middle Ages, and on subjects in the fields of the sixteenth and early half of the eighteenth centuries. There are two articles on the nineteenth century Dutch statesman Thorbecke (1972 was the anniversary of his death). And there are also contributions on the homeland of Erasmus and on Dutch reactions to the publication of Darwin's Origins of Species. Also included are surveys of recent historical publications in the Netherlands and of those from Belgian historians that appeared in Dutch. A group of English historians, working under the guidance of Professor Swart, of University College, London, has surveyed the former, this article being edited by Mrs Alice Carter of the London School of Economics. Mithilfe eines generationenübergreifenden Ansatzes erläutert er die steigende Bedeutung von Offizierslaufbahnen bei der Akquise von klientelaren Bindungen, Einkünften, sozialem Prestige und politischem Einfluss. Adligen Traditionen bewahrten große Leistungsbereitschaft gemäß spezifischer Normen wie Caritas, Religiosität, kriegerischem Mut, wobei sich beide Adelsgruppen durch ein prestigeträchtiges Mäzenatentum auszeichneten. Deutlich wird für beide Länder, dass einerseits regionale Traditionen noch lange nationale Orientierungen überlagerten, dass andererseits aber gerade der Hochadel in einem europäischen Raum agierte. Adlige werden hier zudem als liberale Politiker und als erfolgreiche Unternehmer fokussiert. Vor allem werden sie in diesem Band als Meister der Sichtbarkeit medien- und kulturgeschichtlich präsentiert. Als weiterführender Diskussionspunkt wird gefragt, ob man das 19. Jahrhundert schlicht als bürgerlich etikettieren kann.
