Als blijkt dat Els Van Doren verwikkeld zat in een heuse driehoeksverhouding en dat haar parachute bovendien gesaboteerd werd, gaat er een schokgolf door heel Vlaanderen. Al gauw wordt haar vriendin, Els Clottemans, aangeduid als verdachte van deze koelbloedige moord. Maar Clottemans blijft ontkennen. Uiteindelijk wordt ze tijdens een spraakmakend assisenproces veroordeeld tot 30 jaar. Vlaanderen blijft echter met een verward gevoel achter. Kan iemand schuldig verklaard worden zonder harde bewijzen? Is het onderzoek goed gevoerd? Faroek Özgünes tracht in dit boek het complete verhaal achter de parachutemoord te reconstrueren. Vier jaar lang ging hij zélf op onderzoek uit. Hij sprak met deskundigen en met verscheidene mensen die nauw betrokken zijn bij het onderzoek of die zelf tot de parachutewereld behoren. Hij overwon zijn hoogtevrees en maakte zelf een parachutesprong, in dezelfde omstandigheden als die tijdens de fatale sprong van Els Van Doren. Hij kijkt verder dan Vlaanderen en bespreekt voorbeelden van soortgelijke sabotages in het buitenland. Ook de bewogen zittingen van het proces worden belicht: van verrassende getuigenissen tot anonieme brieven en een kroongetuige die foto's van het slachtoffer had verkocht.
