In 1997 heeft de Theologische Universiteit te Kampen (THUK) in samenwerking met de Universitas Kristen Indonesia Maluku (UKIM) te Ambon, met subsidie van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen, een begin gemaakt met een grootschalig onderzoek naar de bronnen betreffende de geschiedenis van de Protestantse Kerk in de Molukken. Deze bronnenstudie vormt een onderdeel van een reeks van 5 delen over de Molukse kerk: twee delen over de kerk in de periode van de VOC, twee delen over kerk en zending in de 19de eeuw en dit deel over een specifieke kerk: die van Banda.in de 19de eeuw. Daarnaast zullen nog kleinere studies verschijnen over de Molukse kerk op afzonderlijke eilanden als Ternate, Halmaheira, Buru, etc. Door de oorlog in de Molukken liep het onderzoek vertraging op, maar des te verheugender is het dat deze bronnenuitgave over de Molukse kerk in de 19de eeuw gepubliceerd is. De documenten die in deze delen zijn opgenomen zijn uniek, zij zijn afkomstig uit het Nationaal Archief te Den Haag, het Nationaal Archief te Jakarta, verschillende overheids- en zendingsarchieven in Engeland, en uit de zendingsarchieven van de vroegere Raad voor de zending van de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk te Oegstgeest. De uitgaven betreffende de Molukken in de Grote Reeks van de Werkgroep geschieden onder eindredactie van prof. P.N. Holtrop, prof. dr G.J. Schutte en dr Th. van den End. Op deze bronnenpublicatie promoveerde de auteur.

Deze tweedelige bronnenpublicatie betreffende de geschiedenis van de kerk (t.w. de Indische Kerk en het Nederlands Zendelinggenootschap, NZG) en de christenheid in de Midden-Molukken omvat in totaal 332 documenten, ontleend aan archieven in Indonesië, Nederland en Engeland. Deel I (1803-1854) wordt geopend met een historische inleiding en kent een glossarium. Deel II (1854-1900) bevat bijlagen met biografische gegevens van predikanten, hulppredikers, zendelingen en hoofden van bestuur, alsmede tabellen met aantallen en woonplaatsen van de Molukse christenen op Ambon, de Uliassers, Ceram en omliggende eilanden, althans voorzover bekend. De documenten, die waar nodig van aantekeningen zijn voorzien, zijn van de hand van regerings- en bestuursambtenaren, predikanten, zendelingen, schoolmeesters en het NZG-bestuur. De documenten betreffen de meest uiteenlopende zaken, zoals het kerkelijk leven in de Engelse tijd (die eindigde in maart 1817), de verhouding tussen kerk en traditionele religie, de betrekkingen tussen de Indische Kerk, het NZG en de regering die zich altijd intensief met het geloofsleven van de Molukse bevolking heeft ingelaten, de ontwikkeling en vormgeving van het volksonderwijs inclusief de daarbij gebruikte methoden en leermiddelen, het ontstaan van een eigen vorm van vroomheid en de manier waarop kerk en zending daarmee omgingen, het gebruik en de verspreiding van de bijbel, psalm- en gezangboeken, leerredenen en andere kerkelijke teksten, de problemen rondom de Maleise bijbelvertaling, de voor de Molukse kerk- en cultuurgeschiedenis zo belangrijke groep van schoolmeesters-voorgangers, en tot slot de betrekkingen van de kerk en de islam, en, aan het eind der eeuw, die tussen de kerk en de roomse Missie.

Healers on the Colonial Market is one of the few studies on the Dutch East Indies from a postcolonial perspective. It provides an enthralling addition to research on both the history of the Dutch East Indies and the history of colonial medicine. This book will be of interest to historians, historians of science and medicine, and anthropologists. How successful were the two medical training programmes established in Jakarta by the colonial government in 1851? One was a medical school for Javanese boys, and the other a school for midwives for Javanese girls, and the graduates were supposed to replace native healers, the dukun. However, the indigenous population was not prepared to use the services of these doctors and midwives. Native doctors did in fact prove useful as vaccinators and assistant doctors, but the school for midwives was closed in 1875. Even though there were many horror stories of mistakes made during dukun-assisted deliveries, the school was not reopened, and instead a handful of girls received practical training from European physicians. Under the Ethical Policy there was more attention for the welfare of the indigenous population and the need for doctors increased. More native boys received medical training and went to work as general practitioners. Nevertheless, not everybody accepted these native doctors as the colleagues of European physicians.
