In these words the great Napoleon justly condemned the practice of making 'snibrets' of literature the staple of education. But the criticism is often carried farther, and With less reason. We have all heard anthologies condemned again and again as superficial things. Everybody, it is said, ought to make his own anthology. An admirable counsel of perfection, which becomes every year less and less possible of fulfilment as year by year the printing presses of all the nations increase indefinitely the vast piles of books already existing in the world. Even so genuine a lover of literature as Sir Arthur quiller-couch has lately expressed some gratitude to those who burnt the great library at Alexandria and destroyed an immense amount of the accumulated rubbish of the ancient world. The real charge against them, he says, is not that they burnt, but only that they burnt indiscriminately. In other words, he does not blame them for making an anthology, or even for making it violently, but only for making it badly. Excerpt from De Quincey's Collected Writings, Vol. 10: Literary Theory and Criticism While passages of literary theory and criticism are to be found plentifully enough in the preceding volumes, interspersed through their various kinds of matter, it is in the present volume and the next that the reader will find collected those particular Essays of De Quincey in which he either expounds more formally his views of the principles of literature in its different varieties, or applies these more expressly to individual cases. The Letters to a Young Man whose Education has been neglected were written in 1823, when De Quincey was in the first celebrity of his Opium-Eating Confessions. Though in his wayward and corner-exploring fashion, they are really excellent, and may be read still with profit, not only for the interesting information which they contain on some matters of literary history, but also for edifying doctrine on some vexed questions in the business of self-education. In this last respect, they may be recommended, I think, for a certain real practicality, a quality of solid good sense, which we are not in the habit of always attributing to De Quincey. That they attracted a considerable amount of attention at the time of their original appearance in the London Magazine is curiously attested by a whimsical compliment which they received from the most popular, and now best remembered, of all De Quincey's fellow-contributors to that old periodical. A portion of the Introduction is devoted to the study of his personality. The text adopted is, except in the case of the Confessions, the latest to which De Quincey gave his approval. For the use of the original Confessions in place of the greatly enlarged version of 1856, there appears to be a better excuse than that of brevity. As will be pointed out in the Introduction, it is at least a question whether the earlier form had not the preference of the author himself.
