Door den Heer VAN KAMPEN uitgenoodigd, om na het vertalen van den Phaedo en den Theaetetus, mijne krachten tot de overbrenging van Plato’s Republiek in te spannen, deinsde ik in den beginne voor dien arbeid terug. Eindelijk echter heeft mijne genegenheid voor dat boek, hetwelk op mijn eigen ontwikkeling een grooten invloed heeft uitgeoefend, en de overweging, dat PLATO uit geen zijner schriften beter kan gekend worden, mij doen besluiten het werk op mij te nemen, vooral, daar het tegenwoordig welligt meer dan vroeger als heilzaam kan beschouwd worden, Plato’s Republiek toegankelijk te maken. Een paar plaatsen heb ik eenigzins bekort. Die het oorspronkelijke niet kennen, zullen er niets door missen; en de literatoren, die mijne vertaling misschien in handen nemen, zullen mij, hoop ik, gelijk geven. Ik heb weinig aanteekeningen bij den text gevoegd. Plato’s Republiek is voor den vertaler moeijelijk, maar na de vertaling blijft er weinig over, dat nog eene opzettelijke verklaring noodig heeft. Daarenboven was veel van hetgeen nog opheldering zou behoeven, door mij reeds vroeger behandeld. In zulke gevallen heb ik mij vergenoegd derwaarts te verwijzen.

De ideale staat is Plato's theoretische hoofdwerk. Zijn politieke theorie vormt een hecht geheel met zijn denkbeelden op psychologisch, kentheoretisch en metafysisch gebied, en probeert ook een antwoord te geven op de vraag hoe het individu het beste kan leven. Maakt misdaad gelukkig? Loont wetsovertreding die onbestraft blijft? Zou het bezit van een onzichtbaar makende ring het gedrag van een mens terecht veranderen? Plato meent van niet. Tegenover meeslepende betogen over het immorele leven stelt hij de eerste samenhangende psychologische theorie uit de geschiedenis, waarin hij vijf menstypen onderscheidt: van de evenwichtige intellectueel tot de dictatoriale verslaafde. Parallel aan deze psychologische theorie loopt de politieke. Ook daarin worden vijf typen onderscheiden: aan de top van Plato's hiërarchie de harmonische ideale staat, onderaan de volledig ontspoorde dictatoriale samenleving. De democratie met zijn ongeremde consumptie en ongerichte economische groei wordt door Plato als de op een na slechtste staatsvorm beschouwd en in een groots fantasieverhaal over politieke degeneratie met verrassend herkenbare voorbeelden beschreven. Plato beschouwt leven als een vak. Uitvoerig schetst hij de daarvoor noodzakelijke opleiding, die is gericht op een zogenaamd objectieve vaststelling van normen en waarden. Niet iedereen heeft voldoende talent. Politieke macht komt uitsluitend toe aan het hoogste psychologische type: de harmonisch ontwikkelde mannelijke en vrouwelijke wetenschapsmensen die zijn curriculum met succes hebben voltooid. Zij vormen, als beschermers van objectieve normen en waarden, een soort Raad van Hoeders, zoals die bekend is uit theocratieën als het huidige Iran, een Raad die - om van de mens te redden wat er te redden valt - bijvoorbeeld niet terugschrikt voor een vernuftig gemanipuleerd eugenetisch programma, een materieel en seksueel communisme en een zeer strenge censuur op alle vormen van kunst. Met een verhaal over de ervaringen die een mens na de dood zouden wachten rondt Plato alle theorieën af.
