Ad van Liempt rekent aan de hand van een tiental pioniers af met het beeld dat niets gebeurde in de jaren vijftig. Juist de jaren van wederopbouw brachten vele belangrijke vernieuwingen met zich mee. Saai. Sloom. Duf. Om de jaren vijftig te beschrijven hebben we meestal genoeg aan woorden van één lettergreep. Maar dat beeld, vastgelegd in ons collectieve geheugen, is toe aan herziening. Steeds meer wordt duidelijk dat juist de jaren van wederopbouw allerlei belangrijke vernieuwingen met zich meebrachten, aangejaagd door visionaire, volhardende mensen met een vastomlijnd plan voor een betere toekomst. In dit meeslepende boek rekent Ad van Liempt aan de hand van elf pioniers van de jaren vijftig af met het beeld van een benauwd decennium waarin niets gebeurde. Zo zorgde minister Jo Cals met de Mammoetwet voor een radicale herinrichting van het onderwijs. Waterstaatkundige Johan van Veen had de plannen voor de Deltawerken in 1953 al klaarliggen, wat de doorslag gaf bij de snelle realisatie ervan. Psychologe Mary Noordanus zette zich met hart en ziel in voor een vrije ontwikkeling van het kind, in een tijd dat veel gezinnen nog autoritair werden geleid. In Indonesië werd Mieke Bouman de heldin van miljoenen Nederlanders door landgenoten juridisch bij te staan in Soekarno's showprocessen. De Limburgse aannemer Egidius Joosten kreeg de KNVB op de knieën en dwong het betaalde voetbal af. En zangeres Pia Beck bracht de jazz onder de mensen en liet zien hoe je ook toen al een BN'er kon worden. Het zijn stuk voor stuk fascinerende persoonlijkheden, aan wie we veel te danken hebben en die ieder op hun eigen terrein duidelijk maken dat de jaren vijftig oneindig veel opwindender waren dan de meeste mensen tot nu toe dachten.

We live in a world where the loss of sea ice and thawing of coastal grounds in the north, and renewed marine transgression and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events globally, are becoming commonplace. This volume presents a timely examination of coasts, the geological environment at particular risk, as global warming brings on this new reality. In 23 papers, low lying, mainly siliciclastic coasts are reviewed, described and analysed, under a variety of climates in quasi-stable tectonic settings along passive, trailing-continental edges from Polar Regions to the Tropics. Examples include coast of the Arctic seas, temperate to tropical eastern shores of the Americas, western Portugal, Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, South Africa and Australia. The entire coastal zone (landscape) is considered ranging from geophysical processes and products to biological entities including the adaption of Native People in various climatic zones. Knowledge of the state of the coasts now, and how the coastal plain has evolved since Late Pleistocene, is crucial for any realistic planning for the future.

Het tijdvak tussen het eind van de achttiende eeuw en het midden van de negentiende eeuw was voor de Nederlandse doopsgezinden een periode van grote veranderingen. We zien een groeiende maatschappelijke participatie. Ook veranderde de identiteit van de doopsgezinden in religieuze zin. Grote gevolgen had de oprichting van de ‘Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit’ in 1811. Deze nam de opleiding van predikanten voor de Nederlandse doopsgezinde gemeenten onder haar hoede en voorzag tevens in de financiële ondersteuning van minder draagkrachtige gemeenten, die niet in staat waren een behoorlijke salariëring van de predikant te betalen. Daarmee werd een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan de ontwikkeling van de doopsgezinde geloofsgemeenschap tot een ‘respectabel kerkgenootschap’. In dit boek wordt beschreven hoe in de periode 1800-1860 deze ‘doperse doorbraak’ zich voltrok in de twaalf doopsgezinde gemeenten op het Groninger platteland. De auteur gaat tevens in op de vraag hoe het Groninger verhaal zich verhoudt tot de doopsgezinde geschiedschrijving tot nu toe, die vooral een landelijk beeld schetst. Het boek biedt een schat aan informatie, niet alleen voor degenen die geïnteresseerd zijn in de geschiedenis van Groningen en de Groninger doopsgezinden, maar ook voor degenen die belangstelling hebben voor de negentiende-eeuwse Nederlandse kerkgeschiedenis en de plaats van de doopsgezinden daarin.

Resulta pues imprescindible, el tratar de incrementar los tres primeros factores, con el objeto de tomar decisiones mejor informadas, ya que mucho de lo que llamamos sagacidad e intuicion no es sino mejores datos disponibles.
