These sources are supplemented by works from less-famous artists, as well as popular emblem books, child-advice manuals, observations from the emerging child sciences, and personal documents. Jeroen Dekker observes children's emotions mainly in the child's world and in the domestic emotional space, and connects them with history's ongoing, underlying discourse on education and the emotions. This discourse was developed by theologians, philosophers, and moralists like Augustine, Aquinas, Erasmus, Descartes, Jacob Cats, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by Romantic educationalists like Friedrich Fröbel and Ellen Key, and by scientists like Charles Darwin and William James who emphasized the biological instead of the moral fundament of children's emotions. In de Nederlanden ontstaan aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw speciale glazen waarmee drankspelletjes gespeeld kunnen worden. Ze zorgen voor saamhorigheid, een hoop vermaak en natuurlijk uiteindelijk grote dronkenschap. Schertsglazen zijn glazen die de drinker op een of andere wijze verrassen. Als je niet weet hoe je ze moet gebruiken, krijg je bij sommige glazen een plens wijn over je heen. Andere glazen zijn zo ingenieus gemaakt dat je ze moet bestuderen voordat je überhaupt begrijpt hoe je eruit kunt drinken. Ook zijn er glazen met een bijzondere vorm - de bekende laars, maar ook een fabeldier, een hoorn of zelfs een pistool. Weer andere maken vreemde geluiden als eruit gedronken wordt. Juist het speelse karakter maakt de fopglazen tot technische hoogstandjes, het toppunt van wat glasblazers toentertijd konden maken. Deze glazen werden gebruikt in alle lagen van de bevolking. Glasexpert Kitty Laméris en meesterglasblazer Marc Barreda deden grootschalig onderzoek naar het gebruik en de geschiedenis van de fopglazen, hun gebruikers en de maakwijze. Het leidde tot baanbrekende nieuwe inzichten. During the first seventy years of the seventeenth century the Dutch town of Delft emerged as one of the most important artistic centers in the Netherlands. Although famous as the birthplace of the painter Johannes Vermeer, Delft was also home to an extended community of masters that included among many others Pieter de Hooch and Carel Fabritius. In this introduction to the key Delft artists, Axel Rüger places Vermeer’s masterpieces within their historical and artistic context. This book, accompanying a major loan exhibition at the National Gallery, London, reveals how artistic and cultural developments of the early seventeenth century paved the way for the flowering of art in the city, culminating in the master works of the 1650s and 1660s. Investigating the artistic production of the city genre by genre, the author builds a picture of the so-called Delft School and its influences.
