The Society of Jesus was founded by Ignatius Loyola on a principal of strict obedience to papal and superiors’ authorities, yet the nature of the Jesuits's work and the turbulent political circumstances in which they operated, inevitably brought them into conflict with the Catholic hierarchy. In order to better understand and contextualise the debates concerning obedience, this book examines the Jesuits of south-western Europe during the generalate of Claudio Acquaviva. Acquaviva’s thirty year generalate (1581-1615) marked a challenging time for the Jesuits, during which their very system of government was called into doubt. The need for obedience and the limits of that obedience posed a question of fundamental importance both to debates taking place within the Society, and to the definition of a collective Jesuit identity. At the same time, struggles for jurisdiction between political states and the papacy, as well as the difficulties raised by the Protestant Reformation, all called for matters to be rethought. Divided into four chapters, the book begins with an analysis of the texts and contexts in which Jesuits reflected on obedience at the turn of the seventeenth century. The three following chapters then explore the various Ignatian sources that discussed obedience, placing them within their specific contexts. In so doing the book provides fascinating insights into how the Jesuits under Acquaviva approached the concept of obedience from theological and practical standpoints.

Behaviour analysis has tradionally been one of the main areas and main approaches to psychology. Au Québec et au Canada, comme aux États-Unis et dans nombre de pays européens, l'étude des idées politiques constitue l’un des principaux champs institutionnalisés de la recherche et de l'enseignement en science politique. Toutefois, à la différence des chercheuses et chercheurs des autres champs de la science politique, et plus généralement des sciences humaines et sociales, les spécialistes du champ des idées politiques se sont relativement peu arrêtés à une réflexion explicite, systématique et approfondie sur le découpage de leur objet d'étude (le "quoi"), sur leurs méthodes (le "comment") et sur les fins de leur entreprise (le "pourquoi"). Autrement dit, comparé à d'autres champs, les chercheuses et chercheurs en idées politiques sont étonnamment peu loquaces sur tout ce qui concerne leurs approches. Sans doute symptomatique de ce déficit de réflexivité, la dénomination même du champ est l'objet d’un certain flou. Lorsque l'on parle d'étude des idées politiques, il peut s'agir de philosophie politique, d'histoire des idées politiques, de théorie politique, ou encore de pensée politique. Nous rencontrons régulièrement ces différentes appellations dans la pratique et dans les livres. Elles sont parfois confondues, parfois distinguées, souvent reçoivent des définitions contradictoires. En plus de proposer en introduction une interprétation de ce qui rassemble et de ce qui distingue les pratiques associées au champ, cet ouvrage présente un état des lieux des principales approches à l'étude des idées politiques.
