A major feat of research and synthesis, this book presents the first comprehensive history of the Dutch economy in the nineteenth century--an important but poorly understood piece of European economic history. Based on a detailed reconstruction of extensive economic data, the authors account for demise of the Dutch economy's golden age. After showing how institutional factors combined to make the Dutch economy a victim of its own success, the book traces its subsequent emergence as a modern industrial economy. Between 1780 and 1914, the Netherlands went through a double transition. Its economy--which, in the words of Adam Smith, was approaching a "stationary state" in the eighteenth century--entered a process of modern economic growth during the middle decades of the nineteenth. At the same time, the country's sociopolitical structure was undergoing radical transformation as the decentralized polity of the republic gave way to a unitary state. As the authors show, the dramatic transformation of the Dutch political structure was intertwined with equally radical changes in the institutional structure of the economy. The outcome of this dual transition was a rapidly industrializing economy on one side and, on the other, the neocorporatist sociopolitical structure that would characterize the Netherlands in the twentieth century. Analyzing both processes with a focus on institutional change, this book argues that the economic and political development of the Netherlands can be understood only in tandem.

Prof. Mr. Hendrik Lodewijk Drucker (1857-1917) leefde in een interessante tijd, een tijd waarin Nederland van een rurale maatschappij overging naar een dynamische, industriële samenleving, van een maatschappij van gezeten burgers naar een met actie voerende revolutionairen. Het was een tijd van erbarmelijke omstandigheden van hele groepen mensen, van opkomst van politieke partijen, van spanningen binnen de liberalen, van antisemitisme, en in de rechtswetenschap van aandacht voor de empirie en voor het recht als instrument van sociale verandering. Lodewijk Drucker had oog voor de noden van de arbeidende klassen en voor de verpauperde onderlaag van de bevolking. Hij is de vader van het arbeidscontract geworden, door sommigen in die tijd als een ongepaste inbreuk op de vrije wil van patroon en arbeider beschouwd. Hij was een aardige, wat verlegen, zachtmoedige, sociaal voelende, geestige en zeer intelligente man, scherpzinnig. Maar hij kon ook scherp zijn en hij kon niet zo goed tegen kritiek, hij hield graag de controle. Hij was achtereenvolgens advocaat, hoogleraar in Groningen, hoogleraar in Leiden, Lid van de Tweede Kamer en lid van de Eerste Kamer der Staten-Generaal. Daarnaast was hij lid van de gemeenteraad, eerst in Groningen, later in Leiden. En hij deed nog veel meer, ondersteunde mensen en initiatieven intellectueel en financieel. Hij is niet meer zo bekend. Zijn halfzuster Wilhelmina Drucker die formeel Wilhelmina Lensing heette, is veel bekender. Zij was ook scherp en scherpzinnig, maar toch anders dan haar halfbroer. In deze biografie gaat het in de eerste plaats om het leven en de werken van H.L., zijn wetenschappelijke en politieke werken, zijn sociale betrokkenheid. Om die te kunnen duiden, is het nodig iets van de context van H.L. Drucker te schetsen, de genoemde sociale, politieke en wetenschappelijke situatie aan het einde van de negentiende en begin van de twintigste eeuw en daarnaast zijn eigen geschiedenis. Zijn eigen geschiedenis was in nevelen gehuld en iets van die nevels is in dit boek opgetrokken. Tijdgenoten van hem hadden gedacht dat hij een groot geleerde met grote werken op zijn naam zou worden, of een staatsman. Hij is het beide niet geworden en in deze biografie wordt aannemelijk gemaakt dat dat alles met zijn persoonlijke geschiedenis te maken heeft, met de geschiedenis van zijn ouders en met de verhouding tot Wilhelmina Drucker die deel uitmaakte van zijn geschiedenis. Zij wist hem met haar pen pijnlijk te treffen, in het hart. Hij is niettemin een groot man geworden, een man die zijn eigen geschiedenis een door hem gewenste richting heeft kunnen geven, een edel mens.

Arbeiders hadden in de negentiende eeuw weinig mogelijkheden om zichzelf intellectueel te ontwikkelen. Ook machinist Bram Lansen (1847-1931) moest hard en lang werken om zijn gezin te onderhouden. Maar hij wilde meer. Hij las veel, bezocht lezingen, zocht intensief naar de betekenis van het leven en filosofeerde over de ideale samenleving. Nadat hij zich had los gemaakt van het protestantse geloof vond hij nieuwe inspiratie in de vrijmetselarij. De ideeën die hij daar opdeed, leidden hem rond 1878 tot het socialisme. Uiteindelijk kwam hij terecht in de vrijdenkersbeweging. Bram Lansen is ook een van de weinig arbeiders van wie geschriften zijn overgeleverd. Zijn visie op de maatschappij en zijn pleidooien voor de bevrijding van de mensheid legde hij vast in vele opstellen en gedichten. Ze vormen de basis voor de biografie van deze zeer opmerkelijke en onafhankelijke arbeider uit de negentiende eeuw.

The history of the smaller European countries is rather neglected in the teaching of European history at university level. We are therefore pleased to announce the publication of the first comprehensive history of the Low Countries - in English - from Roman Times to the present. Remaining politically and culturally fragmented, with its inhabitants speaking Dutch, French, Frisian, and German, the Low Countries offer a fascinating picture of European history en miniature. For historical reasons, parts of northern France and western Germany also have to be included in the "Low Countries," a term that must remain both broad and fluid, a convenient label for a region which has seldom, if ever, composed a unified whole. In earlier ages it as even more difficult to the region set parameters, again reflecting Europe as a whole, when tribes and kingdoms stretched across expanses not limited to the present states of Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Nevertheless, its parts did demonstrate many common traits and similar developments that differentiated them from surrounding countries and lent them a distinct character. Internationally, the region often served both as a mediator for and a buffer to the surrounding great powers, France, Britain, and Germany; an important role still played today as Belgium and the Netherlands have increasingly become involved in the broader process of European integration, in which they often share the same interest and follow parallel policies. This highly illustrated volume serves as an ideal introduction to the rich history of the Low Countries for students and the generally interested reader alike.
