De thuiskomst van kapitein Rob bevat een jongensnovelle, een streeknovelle en een brief. Het titelverhaal is een eigenaardig geval. We ontmoeten daarin enkele personages uit de beroemde kapitein-Robstrip: Cigaret Larry, professor Lupardi, de avontuurlijke reporters Marga en Willy, en kapitein Rob zelf. Maar dat Rob zich te midden van de woelingen der late jaren zestig, op de (gedemocratiseerde!) Amsterdamse zeevaartschool voornamelijk bezighoudt met experimenteel toneel, en later onder zijn bemanningsleden een zekere swami Avasi Vashtar telt, met wie hij stevig discussieert over het postmodernisme dat valt natuurlijk nogal buiten het jongensboek. In `Klaas drijft boven is de hoofdpersoon een boer. Klaas Kap en Kant noemen de mensen hem vanwege zijn verzameling kant, oorijzers en West-Friese kappen. Hij vindt ze wel eens tijdens veemarkten in Hoorn en Purmerend. Leuke jongens vindt ie daar ook. Intussen verandert de wereld om hem heen in een tempo dat ze nog niet kende. Klaas merkt wel iets van maar verandert hij er ook door? Blijft hij achter? Drijft hij boven? `Wederzijds opgericht ten slotte is een brief van de auteur aan zichzelf toen hij een jaar of vijf was. Geen anekdotes maar de achterkant ervan: geuren, geluiden, licht. De stof waar onze ziel van gemaakt is.

Based on close reading of historical documents--poetry as much as statistics--and focused on the conceptualization of technology, this book is an unconventional evocation of late colonial Netherlands East Indies (today Indonesia). In considering technology and the ways that people use and think about things, Rudolf Mrázek invents an original way to talk about freedom, colonialism, nationalism, literature, revolution, and human nature. The central chapters comprise vignettes and take up, in turn, transportation (from shoes to road-building to motorcycle clubs), architecture (from prison construction to home air-conditioning), optical technologies (from photography to fingerprinting), clothing and fashion, and the introduction of radio and radio stations. The text clusters around a group of fascinating recurring characters representing colonialism, nationalism, and the awkward, inevitable presence of the European cultural, intellectual, and political avant-garde: Tillema, the pharmacist-author of Kromoblanda; the explorer/engineer IJzerman; the "Javanese princess" Kartina; the Indonesia nationalist journalist Mas Marco; the Dutch novelist Couperus; the Indonesian novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer; and Dutch left-wing liberal Wim Wertheim and his wife. In colonial Indies, as elsewhere, people employed what Proust called "remembering" and what Heidegger called "thinging" to sense and make sense of the world. In using this observation to approach Indonesian society, Mrázek captures that society off balance, allowing us to see it in unfamiliar positions. The result is a singular work with surprises for readers throughout the social sciences, not least those interested in Southeast Asia or colonialism more broadly.

In the medieval Low Countries (modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands), Arthurian romance flourished in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The Middle Dutch poets translated French material (like Chrétien’s Conte du Graal and the Prose Lancelot), but also created romances of their own, like Walewein. This book provides a current overview of the Dutch Arthurian material and the research that it has provoked. Geographically, the region is a crossroads between the French and Germanic spheres of influence, and the movement of texts and manuscripts (west to east) reflects its position, as revealed by chapters on the historical context, the French material and the Germanic Arthuriana of the Rhinelands. Three chapters on the translations of French verse texts, the translations of French prose texts, and on the indigenous romances form the core of the book, augmented by chapters on the manuscripts, on Arthur in the chronicles, and on the post-medieval Arthurian material..
