Op 22 februari 1942 pleegde de Oostenrijkse schrijver Stefan Zweig samen met zijn vrouw zelfmoord in Brazilië. Als emigrant op de vlucht voor het naziregime had hij daar kort voor zijn dood zijn herinneringen opgetekend aan een wereld die naar hij vreesde op het punt stond te verdwijnen. De in 1944 postuum verschenen autobiografie biedt een indrukwekkend beeld van het oude Europa waarmee Zweig zich als (geassimileerde) jood, geëngageerd schrijver en humanist sterk verbonden voelde. Op zijn veelvuldige reizen naar Europese metropolen kwam hij in contact met vele invloedrijke intellectuelen en kunstenaars van zijn tijd, zoals Romain Rolland, Maxim Gorki en Einstein. Ook schetst hij een weergaloos, intiem beeld van zijn geboortestad Wenen, dat rond de eeuwwisseling als het onaantastbare centrum van de moderne Europese cultuur gold, met bekende schrijvers als Arthur Schnitzler en Hugo von Hofmannsthal, musici als Gustav Mahler en Arnold Schönberg, en `de outsider Sigmund Freud. In dat supranationale Wenen werd Zweigs ijveren voor een verenigd Europa geboren.

Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was born in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Zweig travelled widely, living in Salzburg between the wars, and was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he moved to London, where he wrote his only novel Beware of Pity. He later moved on to Bath, taking British citizenship after the outbreak of the Second World War. With the fall of France in 1940 Zweig left Britain for New York, before settling in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide.
