Among the Dead Sea Scrolls, Psalms are found in no less than thirty-nine manuscripts. This groundbreaking volume presents the first comprehensive study of these scrolls, by making available a wealth of primary data and investigating the main issues that arise. The first part provides information which many scholars will find enormously helpful, such as descriptions of the manuscripts, listings of variant readings, a synopsis of superscriptions, and indices of contents of all the Psalms scrolls. The second part investigates the issues, some of which are relevant to the Book of Psalms itself (e.g. stabilization in two distinct stages), while others focus upon 11QPsa, the largest Psalms scroll (e.g. part of an edition of the Book of Psalms), and one involves the relation of these manuscripts to the Septuagint Psalter.

This book is a collection of Psalms from the King James Version of the Bible, a collection of Psalms which parallel Psalms which were found within the Dead Sea Scrolls. Not all of the Psalms in the modern Bible were found within the Dead Sea Scrolls, presumably due to the fragmentary condition of the Dead Sea Scrolls. This book is not a transcription or a translation of the actual Hebrew text of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms, and therefore, a transcription or translation of the actual Hebrew text of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms must be sought elsewhere in scholarly publications. The English translation King James Version of the Psalms within this book will only approximate the actual Hebrew text or English translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms. However, the complete text of the King James Version of the individual Psalms found in fragmentary form in the Dead Sea Scrolls will be printed within this book, with the King James Version as an approximate English translation of the Hebrew text of the Dead Sea Scroll fragments, with the fragments indicated by bold text within the printed individual Psalms, according to the verses and fragmented verses contained within the scroll fragments, verses as listed within scholarly reference books. These reference books are listed in the bibliography at the end of this book. These Dead Sea Scroll Psalms verses are numbered according to the verse numbering of the Hebrew Bible Psalms, but the King James Version text is numbered according to the modern text. The Dead Sea Scrolls, as a large collection of scrolls and fragments, contain sectarian original writings manuscripts and scroll fragments, in addition to Hebrew Bible Scroll manuscripts and fragments. Some of these sectarian manuscripts contain references to someone known as the Teacher of Righteousness, however, the actual identity of the Teacher of Righteousness is unknown, and various scholars have suggested various historical persons as possibly being the Teacher of Righteousness. It may be possible that the Teacher of Righteousness was the author of some of the sectarian Dead Sea Scrolls. It may be possible that the Teacher of Righteousness was the author of some of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms, or perhaps the Teacher of Righteousness was a writer who added verses to earlier existing Psalms. Some scholars have suggested that the Teacher of Righteousness was John the Baptist. Some scholars have suggested that the Teacher of Righteousness was Jesus the Nazarene. Some scholars have suggested that the Teacher of Righteousness was James the Righteous, also known as Jacob, the most famous younger brother of Jesus the Nazarene. If some portion of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms were written by Jesus the Nazarene, it would seem that some of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms were written before the crucifixion of Jesus the Nazarene, and it would seem that some of the Dead Sea Scrolls Psalms were written after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus the Nazarene. Only the Psalms found in the Dead Sea Scrolls are included in this book. The King James Version of the Psalms as printed in this book has been slightly modified by the editor.

Mika S. Pajunen contributes both to the understanding of manuscript 4Q381 from the Dead Sea Scrolls and to broader issues related to the reconstruction of damaged scrolls and to the reading of psalms in late Second Temple Judaism. The author focuses especially on the collection of "apocryphal" psalms in 4Q381 and other similar psalm collections, but it is also of interest to the ongoing search for the functions of psalmody in this period.A material reconstruction of manuscript 4Q381 has been made to determine the original placement of all the substantial fragments within the scroll. The reconstruction shows there to be eight psalms in the preserved scroll. A thorough analysis of all of them is incorporated in this study, including a critical Hebrew text and the first English translation of the psalms, a basic outline of the psalms' content with comments on their details, and a presentation of their overall message. All the psalms in 4Q381 discuss specific periods of time. The first three psalms cover a period from the Creation to the expected future of a group identified as God's chosen ones. These are followed by five pseudepigraphic psalms that are named in this study as Praise of the Man of God (David), Praise of Hezekiah, Penitential Prayer of Manasseh, Lament of Josiah, and Penitential Prayer of Jehoiachin. The psalms in 4Q381 make up a consistent whole that is shown to function as a unified lesson on the justice of God toward his elect. In this investigation 4Q381 is placed into its proper place inside some of the larger developments and ideologies perceivable within late Second Temple Judaism. For instance, 4Q381 is part of the general trends discernible in psalmody of this period, namely, a general increase in reflection upon the past and the use of wisdom motifs. But in addition, 4Q381 also gives evidence of a perception of psalms as sources of history that is in the end found to be a much broader phenomenon.

Psalms 146-150, sometimes called “Final Hallel” or “Minor Hallel”, are often argued to have been written as a literary end of the Psalter. However, if sources other than the Hebrew Masoretic Text are taken into account, such an original unit of Psalms 146-150 has to be questioned. “The End of the Psalter” presents new interpretations of Psalms 146-150 based on the oldest extant evidence: the Hebrew Masoretic Text, the Hebrew Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Greek Septuagint. Each Psalm is analysed separately in all three sources, complete with a translation and detailed comments on form, intertextuality, content, genre, and date. Comparisons of the individual Psalms and their intertextual references in the ancient sources highlight substantial differences between the transmitted texts. The book concludes that Psalms 146-150 were at first separate texts which only in the Masoretic Text form the end of the Psalter. It thus stresses the importance of Psalms Exegesis before Psalter Exegesis, and argues for the inclusion of ancient sources beyond to the Masoretic Text to further our understanding of the Psalms.

The authoritative version of the Hebrew Bible as revered by Jews today consists of twenty-four clearly-defined books. The canon is cleanly divided into three parts: Torah, consisting of the Pentateuch, Nevi'im, containing the works of the Prophets, and Ketubim (Writings). However, retroactively applying this model onto the intent of ancient authors is not simply anachronistic but conceals the fascinating (albeit gap-ridden) history of the canon's development as well as the manner in which ancient Jews conceived of, and related to, literary works at large. As the foremost primary source from the Second Temple period, the texts found at Qumran offer insights into the still-developing Bible previously thought impossible. What emerges from study of the Dead Sea Scrolls is a picture of Tanakh at once strikingly similar to, and undeniably discordant from, the contemporary Masoretic text. This work identifies the nature and origins of canonical assumptions in Dead Sea Scroll analysis through the unique lens of the Psalms scroll collection. With this knowledge in hand it is possible to effectively describe the failings of certain anachronistic approaches to the Psalms scrolls and begin to imagine a form of scholarship that progresses beyond them.

In 68 CE, devout Jews left more than one thousand handwritten documents in caves northwest of the Dead Sea. The cave that most defined the beliefs and hopes of these Jews is Cave I. In it were placed many manuscripts, including two copies of the Qumran Psalter or Thanksgiving Hymns. In 1947, Bedouin shepherds found Cave I and retrieved scrolls, including a copy of the Qumran Psalter. It proves Jews created new psalms to complement the Davidic Psalter (the "Psalms" usually attributed to David). We learn for the first time how Jews prior to Hillel and Jesus imagined the universe, articulated unworthiness, and despite suffering were devoted to God's covenant. One author imagines that though his ear was inattentive to God's words he felt a message penetrate his being so that his stone heart palpitated. Throughout and especially in the Self-Glorification Hymn, the authors express transcendence, and a oneness with angels through God's continuing acts of compassion and acceptance. Though confessing unworthiness, the authors thank the Lord for forgiving those who turn from transgression; this theme is the keynote of the symphonic poetry. Jews, Christians, and all interested in spirituality will find insight and comfort studying these psalms and poems.
