FANS OF THRILLERS WILL LOVE MILTON, A REAL HEROIn Cyprus, two grim murders take place, and a precious holy icon is stolen. Wolf von Babenberg, the owner of the firm that insured the icon, sends untested Milton Lessing on the case. Milton is shorter than average, bespectacled, a scholar of human nature and criminology, but can handle himself. His innate goodness is mistaken for naivete. He is small but has the makings of a true hero, which he will have to become before his ordeal is over.On the plane, he meets Joe, a philosopher, who tells him his daughter Elena, an archaeologist, can help him find the icon. As soon as Milton arrives, he is targeted. A mysterious character known as The Voice sends an assassin to kill him, and others entangled in various schemes plan to kill him.Milton enters a world of villainy. On the surface, the island is serene, but underneath it is as toxic as the Datura flower. His arrival causes panic among people who have everything to lose: ● the company secretary,● the financial adviser of a Russian countess and her two servants,● a real estate mogul, ● his sales manager,● the wife of a local politician, whose affair would ruin her husband's career,● Mr. Big, the brains behind the theft, who has a terrible secret,● the master fence and his idiot savant female artist.Enter Elena, the most beautiful woman Milton has ever seen, but icy and remote. Is she real, or is she a reincarnation of Aphrodite? They form a great duo. He, with his brains and she and her psychic and martial arts skills, complement each other to a T.From the abbot, they learn that a Russian monk had visited the remote monastery.Under the influence of the wine he drank at the monastery, Milton dreams that Joe is Zeno, Elena, Aphrodite, and her friend Sabazjos, Dionysus. Are his new friends real, or are they from another world? When Milton tells Callia, museum director, about the Russian connection, she arranges for him to see Countess Bolkonskaya. The inspector, meanwhile, summons Milton to the morgue and shows him two corpses, a monk, who was found hanged, and a thief, who took Milton's picture in the hotel. Who is behind these unrelated murders? The inspector is livid and suggests that Milton leave the island before the "deadly icon" claims more lives.Milton calls on the countess and meets Gregory, her crooked financial adviser, and her servants, Boris and his wife Olga. While viewing the countess's dazzling art collection, Milton asks questions about The Holy Trinity, a precious icon he suspects is a fake. Has he stumbled on another art scheme? Is this another deadly icon? Gregory is nonplussed and invites Milton to a party on board his yacht. Milton goes to the party and during the merrymaking, he slips below to search the staterooms. While examining the contents of a closet, he feels a hand on his shoulder, turns around, and everything goes black.Milton's friends watch in dismay as the lights of the yacht recede into the blackness of the night. Goth written by Michael Bibby and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-11 with Social Science categories.

Since it first emerged from Britain’s punk-rock scene in the late 1970s, goth subculture has haunted postmodern culture and society, reinventing itself inside and against the mainstream. Goth: Undead Subculture is the first collection of scholarly essays devoted to this enduring yet little examined cultural phenomenon. Twenty-three essays from various disciplines explore the music, cinema, television, fashion, literature, aesthetics, and fandoms associated with the subculture. They examine goth’s many dimensions—including its melancholy, androgyny, spirituality, and perversity—and take readers inside locations in Los Angeles, Austin, Leeds, London, Buffalo, New York City, and Sydney. A number of the contributors are or have been participants in the subculture, and several draw on their own experiences. The volume’s editors provide a rich history of goth, describing its play of resistance and consumerism; its impact on class, race, and gender; and its distinctive features as an “undead” subculture in light of post-subculture studies and other critical approaches. The essays include an interview with the distinguished fashion historian Valerie Steele; analyses of novels by Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, and Nick Cave; discussions of goths on the Internet; and readings of iconic goth texts from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to James O’Barr’s graphic novel The Crow. Other essays focus on gothic music, including seminal precursors such as Joy Division and David Bowie, and goth-influenced performers such as the Cure, Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson. Gothic sexuality is explored in multiple ways, the subjects ranging from the San Francisco queercore scene of the 1980s to the increasing influence of fetishism and fetish play. Together these essays demonstrate that while its participants are often middle-class suburbanites, goth blurs normalizing boundaries even as it appears as an everlasting shadow of late capitalism. What exactly have historians, playwrights, philosophers, humourists, poets, politicians, and others had to say about the Seven Deadly Sins, humanity's constant companions? In this collection of thoughts, homilies, witticisms and warnings, internationally renowned historian, Ronnie S Landau, examines the place of the Seven Deadly Sins - pride, envy, wrath, greed, sloth, gluttony and lust - within world culture and consciousness over the past 2,500 years. Penetrating and thought-provoking, often irreverent, this rich assembly of ideas aims to challenge the way we think about our emotions, frailties and predilections. Culled from every conceivable source and discipline, it will make you smile, grimace, glow and fume - but, above all, reflect on the human condition.

Have you ever asked yourself why human beings are compelled to agree? Is it in our organic human nature to gather in like-minded groups and segregate ourselves from others with dissimilar opinions? Why do we feel the need to call ourselves good or right, believing only we have a firm grasp of the truth, while we label those not like us as bad or wrong? Is it possible that our compulsion to agree is an elaborate man-made control mechanism, rooted in fear? James Beyor points out in The Abyss, the second book in his Guarded Hearts trilogy, that we live in a dangerous time, where our agreements are causing us great mental and biological harm. Humankind is suffering from a bio-mental decrepitude. We have been duped into living out a symbolic replica of our human life potential. Beyor points to an urgent need we must all address, which, if we do not, will bring about anther period of inquisition far more insane and destructive than has been suffered by men in the past. This inquisition will require secular obedience as defined by a government out of control. He points to many fundamental elements that foreshadow unparalleled atrocities inflicted on the mentally and biologically impaired human species. This is not just another doomsday tale; it is a message of hope that we can, if we act now, reestablish our innate inner directed sense of all knowing built and begin again to live an authentic life. The people of the world watch helplessly as our institutions falter in their insatiable struggle for dominance over the human race. We must reclaim individual clarity and wean ourselves from our dependency on agreements of symbols and words. In the Beyor Journals you will come face to face with yourself and become aware of your own innate clarity; a genesis gift available to all those who have the courage to join then the great awakening; who claim their right to a living truth. You will never again wonder what is behind your successes and failures.

Deadly Embrace written by Sebastian Balfour and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-05-23 with History categories.

Combining military, political, cultural, social, and oral history, Sebastian Balfour narrates for the first time the development of a brutalised, interventionist army that played a crucial role in the victory of the Francoists in the Spanish Civil War. Spain's new colonial venture in Morocco in the early twentieth-century turned into a bloody war against the tribes resisting the Spanish invasion of their lands. After suffering a succession of heavy military disasters against some of the most accomplished guerrillas in the world, the Spanish army turned to chemical warfare and dropped massive quantities of mustard gas on civilians. Dr Balfour exposes this previously closely guarded secret using evidence from Spanish military archives and from survivors in Morocco. He also narrates the daily life of soldiers in the war as well as the self-images and tensions among the colonial officers. After looking at the motives that drove Moroccans to resist or cooperate with Spain, the author describes the contradictory pictures among Spaniards of Moroccan collaborators and foes. Finally, he examines the Spanish colonial army's response to the Second Republic of 1931-1936 and its brutal march through Spain in the Civil War. QUOTES FROM PAUL PRESTON'S READERS REPORT: 'This is a book of very considerable significance, the work of a first rate historian working at his peak...This is the most complete and wide-ranging account to date of the Spanish involvement in Morocco and of the consequences of that involvement inside Spain itself...written with a compelling blend of elegance and immediacy...this is a major work, one of which any historian would be proud.'

Hear the call to overcome today’s culture of hate and bring healing and hope into our life together. While right-wing conservatives dare to call themselves Christians as they tear down equality and justice, commit horrific acts of violence, and fan the flames of fascism in America, Carter Heyward issues a call to action for Christians to truly hear God’s message of peace and love. Heyward shows how American Christians have played a major role in building and securing structures of injustice in American life. Rising tides of white supremacy, threats to women’s reproductive freedoms and to basic human rights for gender and sexual minorities, the widening divide between rich and poor, and increasing natural disasters and the extinction of Earth’s species--all point to a world crying out for God’s wisdom. Followers of Jesus must first call out these ingrained and sinful attitudes for what they are, acknowledging what the culture of white Christian nationalism is doing to our country and our world, and commit ourselves ever more fully to generating justice-love, whoever and wherever we are.

Don’t leave course design to trial and error. Is trial and error a key pathway to instructional systems design (ISD)? Does success come only to experienced designers with expert instincts? Prior to the 2000 publication of ISD From the Ground Up, it certainly appeared that way to instructional designers just learning the ropes. Chuck Hodell set out to change that. Known as “the man who wrote the book on ISD—literally,” Hodell developed a comprehensive and practical handbook on core ISD practices and principles with a practitioner’s eye. His definitive guide is an industry staple currently found on the bookshelves of experienced instructional designers and university students alike. This updated fourth edition covers all the basics and many advanced tenets important to working professionals, especially those entering the field. Stand-alone chapters offer crucial support to practitioners building foundational skills, while in-depth tutorials and rich insights guide the credentialed designer. At a time when skillful curriculum development is valued more than ever, ISD From the Ground Up offers a refresher on objectives, design plans, lesson plans, and even what it takes to facilitate a focus group. Updated with new chapters and an expanded glossary of terms, it delves into skills and practices essential to the success of today’s in-demand curriculum developer.
