Captioning and Subtitling for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Audiences is a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of captioning and subtitling, a discipline that has evolved quickly in recent years. This guide is of a practical nature and contains examples and exercises at the end of each chapter. Some of the tasks stimulate reflection on the practice and reception, while others focus on particular captioning and SDH areas, such as paralinguistic features, music and sound effects. The requirements of d/Deaf and hard of hearing audiences are analysed in detail and are accompanied by linguistic and technical considerations. These considerations, though shared with generic subtitling parameters, are discussed specifically with d/Deaf and hard of hearing audiences in mind. The reader will become familiar with the characteristics of d/Deaf and hard of hearing audiences, and the diversity – including cultural and linguistic differences – within this group of people. Based on first-hand experience in the field, the book also provides a step-by-step guide to making live performances accessible to d/Deaf and hard of hearing audiences. As well as exploring all linguistic and technical matters related to the creation of captions, aspects related to the overall set up of the captioned performance are discussed. The guide will be valuable reading to students of audiovisual translation at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to professional subtitlers and captioners, and to any organisation or venue that engages with d/Deaf and hard of hearing people.

"On the Fence: The Hidden World of the Hard of Hearing delivers a rare inside look at a virtually invisible population. Deaf writer Mark Drolsbaugh, who grew up hard of hearing, has assembled a group of thirty-seven talented writers who share their remarkable stories and poems. Together, they shed light on the hard of hearing experience and what it means to be on the fence--hovering somewhere in between the deaf and hearing worlds. Stereotypes are smashed as each writer shares a unique perspective that may radically differ from the others. You'll find an American Sign Language advocate in one chapter and a cochlear implant advocate in the next-- anything goes! But don't let the diversity fool you; while no one is exactly the same, deep down we all share one common goal. Find it in On the Fence: The Hidden World of the Hard of Hearing."--Amazon.com viewed Oct. 9, 2020.

The Education Of D Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children written by Peter V. Paul and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-12 with Social Science categories.

A significant number of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children and adolescents experience challenges in acquiring a functional level of English language and literacy skills in the United States (and elsewhere). To provide an understanding of this issue, this book explores the theoretical underpinnings and synthesizes major research findings. It also covers critical controversial areas such as the use of assistive hearing devices, language, and literacy assessments, and inclusion. Although the targeted population is children and adolescents who are d/Dhh, contributors found it necessary to apply our understanding of the development of English in other populations of struggling readers and writers such as children with language or literacy disabilities and those for whom English is not the home language. Collectively, this information should assist scholars in conducting further research and enable educators to develop general instructional guidelines and strategies to improve the language and literacy levels of d/Dhh students. It is clear that there is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ concept, but, rather, research and instruction should be differentiated to meet the needs of d/Dhh students. It is our hope that this book stimulates further theorizing and research and, most importantly, offers evidence- and reason-based practices for improving language and literacy abilities of d/Dhh students.
