Don't just see the sights&―get to know the people. For many people, Brazil conjures up images of football, Carnaval, and fine coffee, but it's much more than beaches and bossa nova. If we had to choose one word to describe the country, it would probably be diversity. The variety of lifestyles, ethnic groups, landscapes, and climates Brazil encompasses is quite simply enormous. This guide provides you with a comprehensive introduction to everything you need to know. Jeitinho is how Brazilians deal creatively with life's everyday complications. Literally translated as a "little way," in practice it means that where there is a will there is also usually a way, regardless of the rules and regulations that may be in place. The jeitinho is so ingrained in daily life that you can see examples everywhere; managing to get a seat when all the places are booked up, traveling with more luggage than is allowed, or successfully ordering something that isn't even on the menu. Culture Smart! Brazil is your guide to understanding the Brazilian people, their values, and the complexities of their national identity. Familiarize yourself with their traditions, culture, and way of life and your experience in this beautiful and life-affirming country will be greatly enriched. Have a more meaningful and successful time abroad through a better understanding of the local culture. Chapters on values, attitudes, customs, and daily life will help you make the most of your visit, while tips on etiquette and communication will help you navigate unfamiliar situations and avoid faux pas.

Coping With Poverty written by Cecília Loreto Mariz and has been published by Temple University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Business & Economics categories.

Only by understanding the enduring poverty of Brazil can one hope to understand the recent growth of Protestant evangelical churches there, Ceciacute;lia Loreto Mariz contends. Her study investigates how religious groups support individualism and encourage the poor to organize. Groups with shared values are then able to develop strategies to cope with poverty and, ultimately, to transform the social structure. Interviews with members and leaders of religious groups, accounts of meetings, and close readings of religious literature contribute to a realistic account of Christian base communities and Assembly of God churches, folk Catholic tradition, and Afro Brazilian Spiritism. Author note: Ceciacute;lia Loreto Mariz, a Brazilian national, teaches Sociology at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil.

Departing from an emergentist approach to Second Language Acquisition, Pronunciation Instruction: Bringing Theory and Practice Together presents a discussion of the sources of difficulties which are likely to be faced by Brazilian learners during the process of acquiring English phonetics and phonology, by presenting empirical data garnered from Brazilian studies of this issue and by proposing communicative activities aimed at helping speakers of Brazilian Portuguese to overcome their pronunciation difficulties in English. This book is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1, Cognition and Second Language Acquisition, briefly introduces the reader into the world of cognition, focusing on issues such as L1-L2 transfer, the link between language perception and production, as well as the effects of explicit instruction. This chapter is of special interest for teachers who are interested in Second Language Acquisition or graduate students in the field of Applied Linguistics. Chapter 2 deals with transfer processes used by speakers of Brazilian Portuguese when undertaking the acquisition of North-American English L2 phonology. These transfer processes will be described and discussed, along with presentation of empirical data providing evidence of the need for explicit instruction. This will set the scene for the proposal laid out in the Chapter 3, which presents instructional activities designed to help students overcome the difficulties reported in the empirical findings. These practical classroom activities are organized in nine separate units – from Intro to Unit 8 – which can be worked from beginning to end or just by choosing some exercises in the range that is presented within each unit. The practical part can be used by Brazilian learners of English in the classroom or for self-study, as the book includes an answer key and CD. The target readers of Pronunciation Instruction: Bringing Theory and Practice Together are teachers and Brazilian students of English, living in Brazil or abroad, in any level of proficiency, who intend to work on their pronunciation, as well as undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of TSLA/TESL/TEFL and Applied Linguistics.
