‘King of the witty village mystery’ Daily Telegraph ‘Simon Brett writes stunning detective stories’ JILLY COOPER ‘A new Simon Brett is an event for mystery fans’ P. D. JAMES It wasn’t the rain that upset Fethering resident Carole Seddon during her walk on the Downs, or the dilapidated barn in which she was forced to seek shelter. No, what upset her was the human skeleton she discovered there, neatly packed into two blue fertiliser bags . . . Amateur sleuths Carole and Jude go to the small hamlet of Weldisham where gossips quickly identify the corpse as Tamsin Lutteridge, a young woman who disappeared from the village months before. But why is Tamsin’s mother so certain that her daughter is still alive? As Jude sets out to discover what really happened to Tamsin, Carole digs deeper into Weldisham’s history and the bitter relationships simmering beneath the village’s gentle facade.

Very little disturbs the ordered calm of Fethering, a self-contained retirement settlement on England's southern coast. Which is precisely why Carole Seddon has chosen to reside there. So the last thing Carole expects to encounter in Fethering is a new neighbour with but one name and an obviously colourful past. "Jude" was not really Fethering... But neither was the body Carole found on the beach. A body, it has to be said, that has disappeared by the time the police arrive. Only Jude is ready to believe what her neighbour says she saw - and from that moment on, the two women are resolved to turn detectives.

This is a story of violence brought on by the greed of a few and the desperation of many. Of a lost generation of young people either waiting to be called up for national service or vainly looking for work, competing against returning soldiers in a depressed job market. Of a time where women who had carried the war effort on the home front were expected to give up their jobs, and their wage, to the returning soldiers and willingly go back to the family kitchen. It is a story of displacement. It is the story of a town's hopes of reclaiming its former glory as a holiday resort. The barbed wire wall has been taken down from across the beach. The London day trippers have begun to reappear in their hundreds and the ice cream vendors are back in business. But Brighton always had an undercurrent of crime. Of London gangs working the racetrack, of petty thieves targeting the rich and of nightclubs posing as legitimate fronts for illegitimate purposes. It is the story of one young man's hopes for a better future. Like all seventeen year olds Bobby Williams was waiting for his call up papers. Even before finishing school Bobby had determined that he would never be poor like his parents. He loved his parents but had seen what little rewards his father had for working long hours for a small business. That was not for him. Bobby needed that one opportunity to get a foot in with the right people and he would be made. In Bobby's mind the right people were those who had money by deliberately bending or breaking the law. When Bobby's opportunity does arrive it proves to be too tempting and that judgement call results in murder. Recently appointed Inspector Daffyd Jones is faced with his first civilian murder case. His military experience has taught him that things are not always what they seem and in tracking down the murderer Jones is drawn into the many and varied sub cultures that gives Brighton its colourful background. The antique dealers of The Lanes, as many and varied as the goods they sold. The lady dealer dressed head to toe in black, who seemed to have forgotten that Queen Victoria is long gone. The bookies from the Race Hill signalling their odds, whilst being prepared for a quick getaway. The vendors at the Open Market shouting their wares whilst keeping one thumb firmly on the weighing scales. The patrons of the numerous pubs and the devotees of soccer all serve to either help or hinder Jones's investigation. With the help of his veteran Sergeant. Jack Smith, Inspector Jones gradually begins to understand his new world of bereaved, displaced and desperate people. Heartbreakingly anxious for a better life yet still constrained by the consequences of war.

Sick From Freedom written by Jim Downs and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-01 with History categories.

Bondspeople who fled from slavery during and after the Civil War did not expect that their flight toward freedom would lead to sickness, disease, suffering, and death. But the war produced the largest biological crisis of the nineteenth century, and as historian Jim Downs reveals in this groundbreaking volume, it had deadly consequences for hundreds of thousands of freed people. In Sick from Freedom, Downs recovers the untold story of one of the bitterest ironies in American history--that the emancipation of the slaves, seen as one of the great turning points in U.S. history, had devastating consequences for innumerable freed people. Drawing on massive new research into the records of the Medical Division of the Freedmen's Bureau-a nascent national health system that cared for more than one million freed slaves-he shows how the collapse of the plantation economy released a plague of lethal diseases. With emancipation, African Americans seized the chance to move, migrating as never before. But in their journey to freedom, they also encountered yellow fever, smallpox, cholera, dysentery, malnutrition, and exposure. To address this crisis, the Medical Division hired more than 120 physicians, establishing some forty underfinanced and understaffed hospitals scattered throughout the South, largely in response to medical emergencies. Downs shows that the goal of the Medical Division was to promote a healthy workforce, an aim which often excluded a wide range of freedpeople, including women, the elderly, the physically disabled, and children. Downs concludes by tracing how the Reconstruction policy was then implemented in the American West, where it was disastrously applied to Native Americans. The widespread medical calamity sparked by emancipation is an overlooked episode of the Civil War and its aftermath, poignantly revealed in Sick from Freedom.
