Excerpt from Debaters' Manual In this volume have been brought together materials that will be of use to the student or individual wishing to know how to prepare a debate or how to organize a debating society or league of debating organizations. While conforming to The Handbook Series in that it is largely a reprint of articles taken from a large number of sources, effort has been made to select those articles that describe the subject most clearly and concisely and, at the same time, give a fairly well-connected account of the various processes. For convenience the work has been divided into two parts. In Part I have been put all the articles relating to the preparation of the individual debate. The articles have been selected so as to describe, in logical order, all the steps through which the debater must go: Selecting the question and defining the terms; analyzing to determine the main issues; collecting and recording evidence; selection and proper use of evidence - this includes a description of the forms of reasoning and fallacies; drafting the brief; preparing the argument from the brief; and practical suggestions for delivery and for the division of the work among the members of the debating team. Part II is devoted to the organization and management of the debating society. In the articles included in this division are conveyed brief and valuable suggestions for organizing a society and drawing up its constitution; the management of the society, including a brief description of the more important rules of order; selecting of the teams; the coaching and judging of a debate. Excerpt from Argumentation and Debate The aim of this book is twofold: (1) to present briefly and clearly the theory of argumentation, (2) to furnish a sufficient number of complete debates for a thorough course in analysis and briefing. The discussion of argumentative theory has been condensed, therefore, and, while illustrated to the point of clearness, is suggestive rather than exhaustive, in order that it may be more fully tested in a study of the selections. Some emphasis has been placed upon the principles of logic for the reason that a knowledge of formal logic on the part of the student cannot be presumed. Furthermore, considerable space has been devoted to a study of evidence as it is found in the courts of law. This material will justify itself for the reason that the legal mind is the one best adapted to debate and for the reason that the debater who confines himself within the limitations imposed by the courts not only builds up a stronger argument but is also better prepared to destroy an opposing argument. The selections have been taken from great debates on critical and living issues of American history, politics, and law. For several reasons they will be found well adapted for analysis and briefing. In the first place, they were delivered by men long practiced in controversy, by men thoroughly trained in life's school of practical affairs. The microfiche frame locations are intended to give the user the page number of the first frame in any series of columns. A researcher who has been referred to page 40 of Day 72, for example, will not find a reference to page 40, but will observe that page 30 is at column 1, row 2 and that page 44 is at column 1, row 3. Page 40 will therefore be at column 11, row 2. Some days are very short and debate will not fill even one line. Day 9 is not cited in the location table, but it will appear between Day 8 and 10 in the line beginning with column 1, row 3. Even though it is sometimes possible to estimate the location of pages in a day it is preferable to use the microfiche frame location table. This is because the debates were not originally set up for filming, and consequently some of the page numbers were typed on portions of the page which do not show up on the fiche.
