First in a two-volume study of Friedman’s long career: “No previous biographer has Nelson’s deep and sophisticated understanding of monetary economics.” —Economic History This study is the first to distill Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman’s vast body of writings into an authoritative account of his research, his policy views, and his interventions in public debate. With this ambitious new work, Edward Nelson closes the gap: Milton Friedman and Economic Debate in the United States is the defining narrative on the famed economist, the first to grapple comprehensively with Friedman’s research output, economic framework, and legacy. This two-volume account provides a foundational introduction to Friedman’s role in several major economic debates that took place in the United States between 1932 and 1972. This first volume in the two-volume account takes the story through 1960, covering the period in which Friedman began and developed his research on monetary policy. It traces Friedman’s thinking from his professional beginnings in the 1930s as a combative young microeconomist, to his wartime years on the staff of the US Treasury, and his emergence in the postwar period as a leading proponent of monetary policy. As a fellow monetary economist, Nelson writes from a unique vantage point, drawing on both his own expertise in monetary analysis and his deep familiarity with Friedman’s writings. Using extensive documentation, the book weaves together Friedman’s research contributions and his engagement in public debate, providing an unparalleled analysis of Friedman’s views on the economic developments of his day. “Magisterial . . . For anyone wanting to understand the ideas that Friedman generated over his research career, this book is, and will remain for some time, the essential guide.” —Financial World

Images Of The Lisbon Treaty Debate In The British Press written by Chiara Nasti and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In this book, Chiara Nasti analyses the distribution of metaphor scenarios and patterns in the public discourse on the European Lisbon Treaty. Her study on a specialized corpus reveals differences and/or similarities in the argumentation and attitudes of the main UK broadsheet and tabloid newspapers. She summarizes the main theories and identification procedures for metaphor investigation, commenting on some developments in the field of metaphor studies. Following Charteris-Black’s Critical Metaphor Analysis, she starts from the premise that metaphors need to be explored in the context where they occur. Her analysis in fact reveals that context investigation is useful to better understand the complexity of metaphors – their pragmatic and cognitive function – and their role in the political debate. Moreover, the analysis reveals as well that metaphors are useful tools for identifying stereotyped roles of the participants in the ratification process; and they are also functional, used to explore both political and journalistic attitudes towards the debate on the Lisbon Treaty. Her book addresses readers from various academic backgrounds who are interested in linguistics, cognitive linguistics and, in particular, the application of corpus linguistics to metaphor investigation. It will also be of interest to academic students dealing with the debate over the Lisbon Treaty.

This study on the potential of law to ensure the social responsibility of a company is an innovative and important study. It is a topical contribution to the sociology of market economies in transition. It is a unique effort to provide detailed practical guidance for the design of the company law in developing economies in general and the new Europe in particular. Christian Joerges, European University Institute Florence, Italy This book provides comprehensive analysis of the recent enlargement of the EU, shedding light on the rationale behind the EU s decisions to enlarge, examining the side effects these choices have on a range of EU policies and particularly on the effect of the Acquis on candidate countries. Emphasis is placed on the area of company law, which occupies a central part in a country s economic planning and therefore its commercial law. Past enlargements are thoroughly explained and the potential impact of the new political landscape in Europe in the wake of the popular rejection of the European Constitutional Treaty on future enlargements is evaluated. A comparative methodology for commercial law drafting in transition and developing economies is put forward and the book concludes with a complete draft of a model company law for transition (and developing) economies. The aim is to provide a template for discussion. This book will be of great interest to those interested in considering the influence that the prospect of EU membership has on transition countries in general, the emphasis being on laws vital to emerging market economies, particularly commercial and company law.

The Actors In Europe S Foreign Policy written by Christopher Hill and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-11 with Political Science categories.

Five years ago observers might have doubted that national foreign policies would continue to be of importance: it seemed inevitable that collective European positions were becoming ever more common and effective. Now the pendulum has swung back with a vengeance. The divided European responses to the prospect of war with Iraq in 1990-91, and to the war in the Balkans have made what happens in the national capitals seem divisive. The Actors in Europe's Foreign Policy is a timely survey of the interplay between the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy and the long-established national foreign policies of the Union's Member-States. The book contains a chapter on each country in the Union as well as a chapter on the United States in its role as the `thirteenth seat at the table'. There is also a chapter on the European Commission, whose role in the external relations of the Community steadily grew during the 1980's. This book will be invaluable for students and scholars of the European Union and of international politics. It will also be of great interest to practitioners in all countries concerned with Europe's role in international affairs.
