Decency remains one of the most prevalent yet least understood terms in today’s political discourse. In evoking respect, kindness, courage, integrity, reason, and tolerance, it has long expressed an unquestioned duty and belief in promoting and protecting the dignity of all persons. A novel approach to the crucial role emotion plays in virtuous action What must a person be like to possess a virtue in full measure? What sort of psychological constitution does one need to be an exemplar of compassion, say, or of courage? Focusing on these two examples, Emotion and Virtue ingeniously argues that certain emotion traits play an indispensable role in virtue. With exemplars of compassion, for instance, this role is played by a modified sympathy trait, which is central to enabling these exemplars to be reliably correct judges of the compassionate thing to do in various practical situations. Indeed, according to Gopal Sreenivasan, the virtue of compassion is, in a sense, a modified sympathy trait, just as courage is a modified fear trait. While he upholds the traditional definition of virtue as a species of character trait, Sreenivasan discards other traditional precepts. For example, he rejects the unity of the virtues and raises new questions about when virtue should be taught. Unlike orthodox virtue ethics, moreover, his account does not aspire to rival consequentialism and deontology. Instead Sreenivasan repudiates the ambitions of virtue imperialism. Emotion and Virtue makes significant contributions to moral psychology and the theory of virtue alike.

How can multiculturalism go wrong? Through extensive interviews conducted in a large Midwestern district, Antonia Randolph explores how teachers perceive students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and the unintended consequences of a kind of "colorblind multiculturalism." She unearths a hierarchy of acceptance and legitimacy that excludes most poor Black students and favors certain immigrant minorities. In addition, she discovers how some teachers distinguish their support for certain forms of student diversity from curriculum diversity, such as accommodating bilingual education, which they find burdensome. This provocative book challenges readers to look beyond the surface benefits of diversity and raises issues about American schools that need to be addressed, including: How school diversity policy has become detached from concerns about equity and social justice, how teachers see diversity as a "good" thing as long as it doesn't inconvenience them or lower their schools' scores on standardized tests, how some immigrant children receive favorable treatment sanctioned by multicultural ideology and practice, how many African-American students and schools suffer racial penalties for being "the wrong kind of different."

In 1984 the Islamic government of Pakistan set aside all Islamic injunctions and took upon itself the burden of depriving the Ahmadi Muslims of their religious, social and human rights. In an attempt to justify this action, the Government of Pakistan published a so called White Paper under the title Qadiyaniyyat-Islam kay liyay Sangin Khatrah (Qadiyaniyyat-A Grave Threat to Islam). Although there was nothing new in this so-called White Paper and the Jama’at literature already included detailed answers to all the issues which were raised, nevertheless Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad Khalifatul-Masih IV (rta), the then Imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, answered these allegations in a series of Friday sermons. These sermons (in Urdu) were published by the London Mosque in 1985 and the English translation is now being published. Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad Khalifatul-Masih IV (rta) delivered this sermon on January 25, 1985 at the Fazl Mosque, London. This is the first Friday sermon in a series of eighteen. It gives a general introduction to the unjust and cruel steps taken by the government of Pakistan and how they have ended up in a dismal failure for the government and a clear victory for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. An English translation of the Friday sermon delivered by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Khalifatul-Masih IV(rta) on January 25, 1985 at the Fazl Mosque, London.
