Between the covers of this slim volumn, the reader is offered glimpses of the courage, compassion, dedication and the devotion with which luminous Buddhist Masters like Nāgārjuna, Āryadeva, Asanga, Chandrakīrti, Šāntideva, Šāntirakşita and Dharmakīrti, etc. upheld the Buddhist philosophy and contributed to its enrichment and propagation. The San-chieh (Three Levels) was a popular and influential Chinese Buddhist movement during the Sui and T'ang periods, counting powerful statesmen, imperial princes, and even an empress, Empress Wu, among its patrons. In spite, or perhaps because, of its proximity to power, the San-chieh movement ran afoul of the authorities, and its teaching and texts were officially proscribed numerous times over a several-hundred-year history. This study of the San-chieh movement uses manuscripts discovered at Tun-huang to examine the doctrine and institutional practices of this movement in the larger context of Mahayana doctrine and practice.

The Sutra of Ananda's Seven Dreams is an ancient little-known text which Ananda experienced a series of seven symbolic dreams. Of the seven, six dreams are so-called the symbols of the Buddhist eschatology, which illustrate the fall of Buddhism. Are those dreams really the symbols of Buddhist eschatology? Alternatively, is there something more to them? The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed analytical study of this sutra. In addition, as there is no complete English translation available, this paper presents an English translation and an associated contemporary interpretation based on my hermeneutics. Lastly, with an overview of the development of various Buddhist schools and general measures (together with contemporary examples for illustration) taken regarding these prophecies, this paper aims to demonstrate that the prophecies within those dreams is certainly a skillful mean to inspire, motivate and unite Buddhists.
