Decoding Persistent Depression: Book Two - Mind and Body Mysteries is the second piece of a puzzle that addresses a vital and compelling question: What if psychological symptoms aren't necessarily the result of some cause, but personality-based means to achieve goals? This text explores common perceptions of mind-body dichotomy, conscious and unconscious functioning, the role of emotions, defining neurotic characteristics, the diverse origins of problematic perceptions and goals, as well as various symptom functions. Written as a probing conversation with easy metaphors, guiding questions, and enlightening examples, it's comparable to therapy or classroom discussion. The information is presented in a fun, adventurous way, allowing a smoother, more approachable path of discovery. Patient investigation will enable you to detect, examine, and contemplate illuminating clues ? often so subtle as to be easily overlooked ? that may bring a telling pattern to light.

This is the final book in a series that explores how persistent depression (a.k.a. dysthymia, dysthymic disorder, neurotic depression, chronic depression) can rise, survive, and thrive. Decoding chronic depression requires realizing psychological symptoms can be an orchestration of physiology, emotions, and behavior that guard against internal and external threats and stressors, and somewhat comparable to the body's evolutionarily-advantageous biological immune system and physical symptoms. Dysthymia can protect people's self-esteem, status, acceptance, and way of living and be a means to avoid ridicule, rejection, failure, and abandonment as well as related to kindhearted attempts to help others, which may explain its prevalence and persistence. Yet, vital elements that reveal clear and understandable logic and function can be invisible and inscrutable to the uninitiated. Identifying patterns and purpose demands a prepared and keen eye. Therefore, this series finale provides distilled illustrations that more closely represent how symptoms genuinely appear. Each a mystery with clues and evidence to detect and decipher. By applying knowledge gathered from the previous books you can identify and integrate psychological elements, mind and body unity, and social factors to discover purpose. While reinforced goal-attaining symptoms tend to remain, you'll also become aware of other reasons why depression can persist. Though psychological insight is helpful and general solutions are offered, given neurotic depression's complexity and unconscious features there are self-help limits and a valid need for external, expert guidance to reduce symptoms.

Rough-and-tumble play provided one of the paradigmatic examples of the appli- tion of ethological methods, back in the 1970's. Since then, a modest number of - searchers have developed our knowledge of this kind of activity, using a variety of methods, and addressing some quite fundamental questions about age changes, sex diff- ences, nature and function of behaviour. In this chapter I will review work on this topic, mentioning particularly the interest in comparing results from different informants and different methods of investigation. Briefly, rough-and-tumble play (or R&T for short) refers to a cluster of behaviours whose core is rough but playful wrestling and tumbling on the ground; and whose general characteristic is that the behaviours seem to be agonistic but in a non-serious, playful c- text. The varieties of R&T, and the detailed differences between rough-and-tumble play and real fighting, will be discussed later. 2. A BRIEF HISTORY OF RESEARCH ON R&T In his pioneering work on human play, Groos (1901) described many kinds of rough-and-tumble play. However, R&T was virtually an ignored topic from then until the late 1960's. There was, of course, a flowering of observational research on children in the 1920s and 1930s, especially in North America; but this research had a strong practical o- entation, and lacked the cross-species perspective and evolutionary orientation present in Groos' work.
