Education is fundamentally concerned with realising the potential of every child, but an increasing social diversity presents enormous challenges for the state in terms of its commitment to providing an appropriate education for all. Factors such as ethnicity, disability and material deprivation are associated with inequality, social exclusion and the risk of low educational attainment. Diversity also reflects divergent cultural values and norms. In responding to the challenges posed by diversity, public education authorities are to some extent constrained by individual or group rights. This book examines the nature of these rights, including those under the European Convention on Human Rights, and the ways and contexts in which they operate. Their social effects are also considered. Areas discussed include the curriculum, special educational needs and choice of school. A key theme in the book is the promotion and enforcement of equal access to education, including higher education. Issues of multiculturalism, the social integration of minorities, religion in education and the recognition of children's independent rights are among those that are also discussed. The book centres on England and Wales and covers the evolving legislative framework, including the Education and Inspections Bill 2006, but relevant legal developments in other states are also highlighted.

The concept of risk is one of the most suggestive terms for evoking the cultural character of our times and for defining the purpose of social research. Risk attitudes and behaviours are understood to comprise the dominant experience of culture, politics and society in our times. Health, Risk and Vulnerability investigates the personal and political dimensions of health risk that structure everyday thought and action. In this innovative book, international contributors reflect upon the meaning and significance of risk across a broad range of social and institutional contexts, exploring current issues such as: the ‘escalation of the medicalization of life’, involving the pathologization of normality and blurring of the divide between clinical and preventive medicine the tendency for mental health service users to be regarded as representing a risk to others rather than being ‘at risk’ and vulnerable themselves the development of health care systems to identify risk and prevent harm women’s reactions to ‘high risk’ screening results during pregnancy and how they communicate with other women about risk men and the use the internet to reconstruct their social and sexual identities Charting new terrain in the sociology of health and risk, and focusing on the connections between them, Health, Risk and Vulnerability offers new perspectives on an important field of contemporary debate and provides an invaluable resource for students, teachers, researchers, and policy makers.

Adolescent Sexual Socialization And Teen Magazines written by Suchi P. Joshi and has been published by Universal-Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Psychology categories.

The majority of scientific research on teen magazines has been conducted from a single-country perspective, even though the experience of sex and sexuality is known to vary by country. Moreover, no research to date has analyzed the sexual content of teen magazines and directly linked it to how young people think or feel about sex. In response to these shortcomings, this book analyzes the topics of sexual desire, sexual danger, virginity loss, pregnancy, and the hook-up culture in the most popular teen magazines of the United States and the Netherlands. Results are then linked to US and Dutch young people's magazine reading and fear of sex, and further investigated by religiosity. While this book primarily addresses researchers of adolescent sexual socialization, it also offers practical insights to parents, health educators, government officials, and magazine editors - ultimately revealing that adolescent sex as a 'forbidden fruit' is a relative term, contingent upon culture.

It is widely accepted that effective education underpins good health and that individuals have a right to be educated so that they understand the risks and health consequences of lifestyle choices. However, the area of childrens health and education is a complex one and the issues involved are often controversial. This volume examines the relationship between childrens education and health from an international perspective and explores some of the more problematic legal and policy issues. The Authors look at a broad range of often controversial issues such as sex, HIV, drugs, bullying, mental health, etc within both a national and international context. The discussion also raises broader questions concerning religious/moral rights within pluralistic societies and the relationship between Authorities, teachers and families. At a time when child health is very much in the spotlight, this study highlights the importance of prevention in healthcare and the role of education in protecting and promoting the rights of the child.

Deconstructing Flexicurity And Developing Alternative Approaches written by Maarten Keune and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-26 with Business & Economics categories.

In recent years, the concept of flexicurity has come to occupy a central place in political and academic debates regarding employment and social policy. It fosters a view in which the need for continuously increasing flexibility is the basic assumption, and the understanding of security increasingly moves from social protection to self-insurance or individual adaptability. Moreover, it rejects the traditional contradictions between flexibility and security, blending the two into a single notion and thus depoliticizing the relationships between capital and labour. This volume provides a critical discussion of the flexicurity concept, the theories upon which it is built and the ideas that it transmits about work, unemployment and social justice. It shows that flexicurity fosters the further individualization of social protection, an increase in precariousness and the further weakening of labour in relation to capital. The authors present a series of alternative theoretical, normative and policy approaches that provide due attention to the collective and political dimension of vulnerability and allow for the development of new societal projects based on alternative values and assumptions.
