Stigma continues to play an integral role in the multifaceted issues facing mental health. While identifying a clear operational definition of stigma has been a challenge in the field, the issues related to stigma grossly affect not only the mental health population but society as a whole. Deconstructing Stigma in Mental Health provides emerging research on issues related to stigma as a whole including ignorance, prejudice, and discrimination. While highlighting issues such as stigma and its role in mental health and how stigma is perpetuated in society, this publication explores the historical context of stigma, current issues and resolutions through intersectional collaboration, and the deconstruction of mental health stigmas. This book is a valuable resource for mental health administrators and clinicians, researchers, educators, policy makers, and psychology professionals seeking information on current mental health stigma trends.

In the realm of literary criticism, deconstruction has reigned supreme for decades, challenging traditional notions of meaning and leaving an indelible mark on our understanding of literature. Yet, as with any intellectual movement, deconstruction has its fervent advocates and its staunch detractors. While it has undoubtedly expanded our horizons and enriched our comprehension of texts, it has also been criticized for its perceived nihilism, its undermining of objective truth, and its elevation of interpretation over meaning. This book embarks on a critical exploration of deconstruction, delving into its core tenets, tracing its intellectual lineage, and examining its far-reaching impact on various disciplines beyond literature, including philosophy, history, sociology, and psychology. Through this comprehensive analysis, we aim to provide a balanced and nuanced perspective on deconstruction, acknowledging its contributions while also highlighting its potential pitfalls. One of the central arguments of this book is that deconstruction's emphasis on the instability of meaning has led to a dangerous relativism, where all interpretations are considered equally valid. This rejection of objective truth has eroded the foundation of our shared understanding and has created a climate of uncertainty and skepticism. Moreover, deconstruction's focus on the deconstruction of texts has often come at the expense of their appreciation, leading to a diminished sense of wonder and awe at the power of literature. Furthermore, we explore the implications of deconstruction for the future of literary criticism. Is it possible to move beyond deconstruction and find a new critical paradigm that can account for the complexity and richness of literature without falling into the traps of nihilism or relativism? We consider various alternatives to deconstruction, such as reconstruction, close reading, and reader-response theory, and assess their potential to offer a more fruitful and sustainable approach to literary criticism. Throughout this book, we draw upon a wide range of literary and cultural examples to illustrate and support our arguments. We examine how deconstruction has been applied to iconic works of literature, such as Shakespeare's plays and modernist novels, and explore how it has shaped our understanding of these texts. We also consider the impact of deconstruction on contemporary literary trends, such as the rise of postmodernism and the increasing emphasis on diversity and inclusion in literature. Ultimately, this book aims to contribute to a more informed and nuanced understanding of deconstruction, its legacy, and its implications for the future of literary criticism. By engaging in a critical dialogue with deconstruction, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of literature and to chart a path forward for literary criticism that is both rigorous and meaningful. `Fast becoming a contemporary classic... this book tries both to be critical and engender critical thinking in a number of ways. It offers an overview of a number of theories that address human distress as well as particular forms of "pathology". This book effectively highlights the way that western society has taken "normal"; and "abnormal" emotional states to be factual entities rather than the constructed understandings of human phenomena that they are.... should be on the reading list of every course/module that attends to human distress′ - Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis This practical and accessible critique of the institutions, practices and presuppositions that underlie the study of `psychopathology′ will be invaluable for students and practitioners who are working to understand mental health and distress. The authors - who come from backgrounds in clinical psychology, psychiatric social work, psychoanalysis, psychology teaching and action research - challenge the traditions of the field. They analyze the notion of `psychopathology′ as a conventional term in psychology and psychiatry through the language and institutions that hold it in place; and explore the implications of deconstructive ideas for the theories and practices that sustain clinical treatments; and offer an alternative way of seeing `psychopathology′, with accounts of critical professional work and good practice. Deconstructing Psychopathology is invaluable reading for students, academics and practitioners across a range of disciplines who are working to understand mental health and distress, including clinical and counselling psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, counselling and psychotherapy.

Deconstructing Normativity? brings together a unique collection of chapters in which an international selection of contributors reflect on the fundamental and often very radical ideas present in Freud’s original 1905 edition of the Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. The book has three aims: the contextualization of the text, the reconstruction of its central ideas and the further philosophical reflection of the contemporary relevance and critical potential of the 1905 edition. The authors challenge mainstream interpretations of the Three Essays, generally based on readings of the final 1924 edition of the text, and of the development of Freudian thought: including, most importantly, the centrality of the Oedipus complex and the developmental approach relative to a tendency towards heteronormativity. Deconstructing Normativity? makes an important contribution in rethinking Freudian psychoanalysis and reopening the discussion on its central paradigms, and in so doing it connects with queer and gender theories and philosophical approaches. This book will be essential reading for psychoanalysts in practice and training, as well as academics and students of psychoanalysis, philosophical anthropology, continental philosophy, sex, gender and sexualities.

This book aims to explain the self as understood decades ago and its evolution in the time of postmodernism. Approaching it primarily from a sociological perspective, while incorporating insights from psychology and philosophy, it portrays the modern self as a unitary, coherent, unified subject created in the time of modernity, which during postmodernism has evolved into a fluid, decentralized, and fragmented subject with increasingly independent multiple identities. The creation of the modern self has been influenced by individualization, rationalization, and power. Each factor is explored in a separate chapter, detailing its impact on the development of the modern Cartesian self. The authors draw on the theories of Goffman, Bauman, and Baudrillard to illustrate the changing nature of the self, viewing it as a performer, a fluid entity, and a simulacrum. While Goffman is not strictly a postmodern author, his ideas foreshadow postmodernism, particularly regarding the transformation of the self. Bauman and Baudrillard, as key figures in postmodern thought, provide valuable insights into this transformation of the self in contemporary times. The book uniquely connects two time periods in which the self evolves, arguing that social factors influence its changing characteristics. As these social factors shift over time, so does the self. Key aspects of the self and its evolution are examined through an original, multidimensional approach that spans a longer time interval.

In the last 30 years, a distinctive intersection between disability studies – including disability rights advocacy, disability rights activism, and disability law – and disability arts, culture, and media studies has developed. The two fields have worked in tandem to offer critique of representations of disability in dominant cultural systems, institutions, discourses, and architecture, and develop provocative new representations of what it means to be disabled. Divided into 5 sections: Disability, Identity, and Representation Inclusion, Wellbeing, and Whole-of-life Experience Access, Artistry, and Audiences Practices, Politics and the Public Sphere Activism, Adaptation, and Alternative Futures this handbook brings disability arts, disability culture, and disability media studies – traditionally treated separately in publications in the field to date – together for the first time. It provides scholars, graduate students, upper level undergraduate students, and others interested in the disability rights agenda with a broad-based, practical and accessible introduction to key debates in the field of disability art, culture, and media studies. An internationally recognised selection of authors from around the world come together to articulate the theories, issues, interests, and practices that have come to define the field. Most critically, this book includes commentaries that forecast the pressing present and future concerns for the field as scholars, advocates, activists, and artists work to make a more inclusive society a reality.

Focusing on race, culture, acculturation, ethnicity, and ethnic identity—concepts commonly used to account for the behaviors of Asian Americans and other minorities—A Postmodern Psychology of Asian Americans examines the effects of modern psychology's epistemological and ontological premises on its investigative methods and concepts. Author Laura Uba looks at the social creation of psychological facts, including portrayals of ethnic and racial groups, and demonstrates, especially in ways pertinent to the study of minorities, that modern psychology needs to reconsider its ways of thinking about study samples, investigative methods, facts, and concepts used to describe and explain behaviors.

How To Rethink Mental Illness written by Bernard Guerin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-16 with Psychology categories.
The world of mental illness is typically framed around symptoms and cures, where every client is given a label. In this challenging new book, Professor Bernard Guerin provides a fresh alternative to considering these issues, based in interdisciplinary social sciences and discourse analysis rather than medical studies or cognitive metaphors. A timely and articulate challenge to mainstream approaches, Guerin asks the reader to observe the ecological contexts for behavior rather than diagnose symptoms, to find new ways to understand and help those experiencing mental distress. This book shows the reader: how we attribute ‘mental illness’ to someone’s behavior why we call some forms of suffering ‘mental’ but not others what Western diagnoses look like when you strip away the theory and categories why psychiatry and psychology appeared for the first time at the start of modernity the relationship between capitalism and modern ideas of ‘mental illness’ why it seems that women, the poor and people of Indigenous and non-Western backgrounds have worse ‘mental health’ how we can rethink the ‘hearing of voices’ more ecologically how self-identity has evolved historically how thinking arises from our social contexts rather than from inside our heads. Offering solutions rather than theory to develop a new ‘post-internal’ psychology, How to Rethink Mental Illness will be essential reading for every mental health professional, as well as anyone who has either experienced a mental illness themselves, or helped a friend or family member who has.
