These two volumes contain all the papers published by Hans Rademacher, either alone or as joint author, essentially in chronological order. Included also are a collection of published abstracts, a number of papers that appeared in institutes and seminars but are only now being formally published, and several problems posed and/or solved by Rademacher. The editor has provided notes for each paper, offering comments and making corrections. He has also contributed a biographical sketch. The earlier papers are on real variables, measurability, convergence factors, and Euler summability of series. This phase of Rademacher's work culminates in a paper of 1922, in which he introduced the systems of orthogonal functions now known as the Rademacher functions. After this, a new period in Rademacher's career began, and his major effort was devoted to the theory of functions of a complex variable and number theory. Some of his most important contributions were made in these fields. He perfected the sieve method and used it skillfully in the study of algebraic number fields; he studied the additive prime number theory of these fields; he generalized Goldbach's Problem; and he began his work on the theory of the Riemann zeta function, modular functions, and Dedekind sums (now often&-and justly&-called Dedekind-Rademacher sums). To this period also becomes what has become known as the Rademacher-Brauer formula. Rademacher came to the United States as a refugee in 1934. In the years that followed, he obtained some of his most important results in connection with the Fourier coefficients of modular forms of positive dimensions. His general method may be considered a modification and improvement of the Hardy-Ramanujan-Littlewood circle method. He also published additional papers on Dedekind-Rademacher sums (with A. Whiteman), general number theory (with H. S. Zuckerman), and modular functions (also with Zuckerman). During the last decade of his life&-the 1960s&-he continued his work on these problems and devoted considerable attention to general analysis&-especially harmonic analysis&-and to analytic number theory. All of the papers in Volume I and ten of those in Volume II are in German. One paper is in Hungarian. The volumes are part of the MIT Press series Mathematicians of Our Time (Gian-Carlo Rota, general editor).

At the time of Professor Rademacher's death early in 1969, there was available a complete manuscript of the present work. The editors had only to supply a few bibliographical references and to correct a few misprints and errors. No substantive changes were made in the manu script except in one or two places where references to additional material appeared; since this material was not found in Rademacher's papers, these references were deleted. The editors are grateful to Springer-Verlag for their helpfulness and courtesy. Rademacher started work on the present volume no later than 1944; he was still working on it at the inception of his final illness. It represents the parts of analytic number theory that were of greatest interest to him. Dedekind sums arose out of the study of elliptic functions and modular forms. They were iniially discovered by Dedekind but have since been studied for their many arithmetic properties. Much work has been done on Dedekind sums and in 1972 Rademacher and Grosswald released a book that summarised much of what was known, as well as providing a history of Dedekind sums. This encouraged greater interest in this topic and provided groundwork for further research. In our essay we seek to update Rademacher and Grosswald's book by providing an overview of some of the research that has been done since its publication. We will also extend some results of Myerson and Phillips, regarding fixed points of Dedekind sums. It is our intention that our findings will provide a foundation for future research in the study of Dedekind sums.

This volume is an outgrowth of the research project "The Inverse Ga lois Problem and its Application to Number Theory" which was carried out in three academic years from 1999 to 2001 with the support of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) (1) No. 11440013. In September, 2001, an international conference "Galois Theory and Modular Forms" was held at Tokyo Metropolitan University after some preparatory work shops and symposia in previous years. The title of this book came from that of the conference, and the authors were participants of those meet All of the articles here were critically refereed by experts. Some of ings. these articles give well prepared surveys on branches of research areas, and many articles aim to bear the latest research results accompanied with carefully written expository introductions. When we started our re~earch project, we picked up three areas to investigate under the key word "Galois groups"; namely, "generic poly nomials" to be applied to number theory, "Galois coverings of algebraic curves" to study new type of representations of absolute Galois groups, and explicitly described "Shimura varieties" to understand well the Ga lois structures of some interesting polynomials including Brumer's sextic for the alternating group of degree 5. The topics of the articles in this volume are widely spread as a result. At a first glance, some readers may think this book somewhat unfocussed.
