Excerpt from Dedication of the Monument at Andersonville, Georgia: October 23, 1907, in Memory of the Men of Connecticut Who Suffered in Southern Military Prisons, 1861-1865 With a promptness quite unmilitary, the "Andersonville Special" left New Haven on schedule time at 1 P.M., Monday, October 21, 1907. The conductor's call of "All aboard" found all in their places, with nobody left. No happier 103 people ever started on so loving a quest, the old survivors' joy in meeting each other being shared to the full by their guests. Thoughtful provision had been made for the comforts and needs of all, even to the presence of a skilled physician. With right of way, a clear track and fast train, distance was covered quickly, and greetings were hardly over and all comfortably settled for the trip when we found ourselves on the Maryland making the circuit of New York by water, a new experience to most and enjoyed by all. The penal and charitable institutions on the East River islands, the great bridges, the tall tower of the Singer Building with its forty-one stories, the Statue of Liberty, the old Castle Garden, where Jenny Lind sang so sweetly years ago, the great ocean liners at their piers, the ferry-boats crossing and re-crossing like shuttles, all held our close attention, while the stiff salt breeze from the bay made snug shelters in demand. Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History Winner of the Gov. John Andrew Award (Union Club of Boston) An acclaimed, groundbreaking, and “powerful exploration” (Washington Post) of the fate of Union veterans, who won the war but couldn’t bear the peace. For well over a century, traditional Civil War histories have concluded in 1865, with a bitterly won peace and Union soldiers returning triumphantly home. In a landmark work that challenges sterilized portraits accepted for generations, Civil War historian Brian Matthew Jordan creates an entirely new narrative. These veterans— tending rotting wounds, battling alcoholism, campaigning for paltry pensions— tragically realized that they stood as unwelcome reminders to a new America eager to heal, forget, and embrace the freewheeling bounty of the Gilded Age. Mining previously untapped archives, Jordan uncovers anguished letters and diaries, essays by amputees, and gruesome medical reports, all deeply revealing of the American psyche. In the model of twenty-first-century histories like Drew Gilpin Faust’s This Republic of Suffering or Maya Jasanoff ’s Liberty’s Exiles that illuminate the plight of the common man, Marching Home makes almost unbearably personal the rage and regret of Union veterans. Their untold stories are critically relevant today.

“It is well that war is so terrible,” Robert E. Lee reportedly said, “or we would grow too fond of it.” The essays collected here make the case that we have grown too fond of it, and therefore we must make the war terrible again. Taking a “freakonomics” approach to Civil War studies, each contributor uses a seemingly unusual story, incident, or phenomenon to cast new light on the nature of the war itself. Collectively the essays remind us that war is always about damage, even at its most heroic and even when certain people and things deserve to be damaged. Here then is not only the grandness of the Civil War but its more than occasional littleness. Here are those who profited by the war and those who lost by it—and not just those who lost all save their honor, but those who lost their honor too. Here are the cowards, the coxcombs, the belles, the deserters, and the scavengers who hung back and so survived, even thrived. Here are dark topics like torture, hunger, and amputation. Here, in short, is war.

This study argues that the image of Union prison officials as negligent and cruel to Confederate prisoners is severely flawed. It explains how Confederate prisoners' suffering and death were due to a number of factors, but it would seem that Yankee apathy and malice were rarely among them.

I Never Was A Coward written by Lesley Jill Gordon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"In popular imagination, the American Civil War remains a conflict in which all soldiers acted out of personal bravery and self-sacrifice. Communal memory and historical scholarship have insisted that every soldier was a hero. But there were men, not paragons but humans, who did not perform admirably or heroically. Many were shirkers, skulkers and deserters; those who fled from battle, or slipped away during long marches. I Never Was a Coward focuses on a single northern regiment to highlight broad questions about bravery and cowardice. The wartime record of the 16[superscript th] Connecticut Infantry Regiment includes candid accusations, confessions and observations of cowardice in battle, in camp, at home, and in prison. By examining letters, dairies and newspapers, we learn firsthand how this regiment defined and redefined cowardice. Their story provides fresh insight into a topic rarely explored by Civil War historians."--BOOK JACKET.
