O que é meio ambiente? O que é educação? O que cada um pode (deve?) fazer em prol de uma coletividade? Sendo que o tamanho de tal coletividade, que pode ser um bairro, uma cidade, país ou planeta... diz muito sobre o tipo de educação ambiental que determinada pessoa realiza. A percepção de que, ao falar meio ambiente, estamos falando de algo muito amplo, que vai além do meio natural, é um dos aspectos fundadores do ambientalismo - que antecedeu a educação ambiental -, ainda em meados do século passado. Esta origem tem direta relação com a pergunta que citei acima: qual o tamanho da coletividade... Nos anos 1960, os primeiros movimentos ambientalistas eram de direita e um deles apelidado de Não no meu quintal. Isto é, a poluição e outras formas de degradação ambiental podem existir longe da minha vizinhança – do meu quintal... Contudo, a percepção de que problemas ambientais, como poluição do ar e dos rios, desmatamento, perda de espécies, entre outros, não são acontecimentos isolados, mas intimamente interligados, baseou a compreensão de que passamos por uma crise ambiental. Décadas depois, já nos anos 1990, ficou claro que esta crise não era só ambiental, mas civilizatória, pois advém da nossa sociedade, com suas diversas características intrínsecas, como várias formas de desigualdade: social, econômica, decisória, de consumo... O debate ambiental passou a figurar em eventos internacionais, sendo o primeiro no âmbito Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) realizado em Estocolmo, Suécia, em 1972, a Conferência das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente. Esta conferência teve início no dia 5 de junho, que depois passou a ser considerado o dia do meio ambiente. Vinte anos depois, em 1992, a cidade do Rio de Janeiro recebeu a Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre o Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento, que foi um marco da participação de movimentos sociais em um evento oficial da ONU e que apresentou avanços na discussão sobre o papel do homem na degradação do planeta. A Rio-92, mais do que uma grande conferência – a maior realizada pela ONU, que perdeu este posto apenas em 2009 -, marcou uma grande internacionalização da temática socioambiental – observe, não é apenas ambiental, mas socioambiental, por considerar também os desafios de nossa sociedade. A preparação para a Rio-92 marcou a inserção da temática ambiental na mídia e nas escolas, desta forma, temos neste momento um grande fortalecimento da educação ambiental (EA) em vários países, incluindo Brasil. A EA é definida na Declaração da Conferência Intergovernamental de Tbilisi sobre Educação Ambiental, decorrente desta conferência realizada em 1977, como a “dimensão dada ao conteúdo e à prática da educação, orientada para a resolução dos problemas concretos do meio ambiente, através de um enfoque interdisciplinar e de uma participação ativa e responsável de cada indivíduo e da coletividade”. Esta visão foi ampliada ao longo dos anos passando a englobar diversas temáticas como igualdade social, de gênero e étnica. Particularmente, gosto bastante desta frase que trata da necessidade da EA ser contextualizada: “Educação ambiental bem-ensinada e bem aprendida tem de ter relação com a vida das pessoas, o seu dia-a-dia, o que elas vêem e sentem, o seu bairro, a sua saúde, as alternativas ecológicas. Caso contrário, é artificial, distante e pouco criativa”. O autor é o Carlos Minc, ex-ministro do meio ambiente, em seu livro Ecologia e Cidadania, publicado pela primeira vez em 1997 pela Editora Moderna. Desde os anos 1960, o entendimento sobre o que é educação ambiental – cujo primeiro registro da expressão é de 1965 – e práticas pertinentes, alterou bastante. Com este livro, buscamos dar uma visão geral da EA realizada no Brasil e também com um capítulo sobre Moçambique. Os capítulos são em sua maioria redigidos por jovens educadores e educadoras que não estão em contexto essencialmente universitário. Desta forma, queremos demonstrar a diversidade de perfis, formações, temáticas, práticas e discursos relacionados a EA que deixou de ser uma simples ferramenta, para ser uma área de conhecimento. É importante destacar que a maioria dos autores buscou descrever as ações que eles desenvolvem, diferentemente, de muitos textos que tratam teoricamente de ações de EA desenvolvidas por outras pessoas. Isto, além de trazem uma visão pessoal com descrição das ações, que envolve a reflexão sobre as atividades desenvolvidas e um desejo por fazer algo concreto, demonstra também um esforço de redigir um texto em formato de divulgação científica, mais convidativo à leitura. Published in 1888, O Ateneu is a classic of Brazilian literature.
