The book presents the confluence of wearable and wireless inertial sensor systems, such as a smartphone, for deep brain stimulation for treating movement disorders, such as essential tremor, and machine learning. The machine learning distinguishes between distinct deep brain stimulation settings, such as 'On' and 'Off' status. This achievement demonstrates preliminary insight with respect to the concept of Network Centric Therapy, which essentially represents the Internet of Things for healthcare and the biomedical industry, inclusive of wearable and wireless inertial sensor systems, machine learning, and access to Cloud computing resources.Imperative to the realization of these objectives is the organization of the software development process. Requirements and pseudo code are derived, and software automation using Python for post-processing the inertial sensor signal data to a feature set for machine learning is progressively developed. A perspective of machine learning in terms of a conceptual basis and operational overview is provided. Subsequently, an assortment of machine learning algorithms is evaluated based on quantification of a reach and grasp task for essential tremor using a smartphone as a wearable and wireless accelerometer system.Furthermore, these skills regarding the software development process and machine learning applications with wearable and wireless inertial sensor systems enable new and novel biomedical research only bounded by the reader's creativity.Related Link(s)

Deep Learning for EEG-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces is an exciting book that describes how emerging deep learning improves the future development of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) in terms of representations, algorithms and applications. BCI bridges humanity's neural world and the physical world by decoding an individuals' brain signals into commands recognizable by computer devices. This book presents a highly comprehensive summary of commonly-used brain signals; a systematic introduction of around 12 subcategories of deep learning models; a mind-expanding summary of 200+ state-of-the-art studies adopting deep learning in BCI areas; an overview of a number of BCI applications and how deep learning contributes, along with 31 public BCI data sets. The authors also introduce a set of novel deep learning algorithms aimed at current BCI challenges such as robust representation learning, cross-scenario classification, and semi-supervised learning. Various real-world deep learning-based BCI applications are proposed and some prototypes are presented. The work contained within proposes effective and efficient models which will provide inspiration for people in academia and industry who work on BCI.Related Link(s)

This book is dedicated to “learning and memory,” a concept at the heart of neuroscience. Learning is about acquiring knowledge and skills, forming memories, and how behavior changes based on past experiences. Learning is closely related to memory. Memory is about the recall and expression of what one has learned. This book presents contributions to learning and memory, ranging from molecular, cellular, anatomical, developmental, and systems to disease-oriented studies. As such, the book provides a gateway for newly interested investigators and serves as a resource for seasoned researchers of learning and memory. Targeted at students and researchers in biological, medical, and behavioral disciplines, this book offers an overview of the work that is being done in this field and highlights any gaps and areas that would benefit from further exploration. Individual chapters focus on research advances in different brain regions and experimental models. In addition, the book will contribute to the training of current and future neuroscientists.

Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have become essential tools in healthcare. They are capable of processing enormous amounts of data to find patterns and are also adopted into methods that manage and make sense of healthcare data, either electronic healthcare records or medical imagery. This book explores how ML/DL can assist neurologists in identifying, classifying or predicting neurological problems that require neuroimaging. With the ability to model high-dimensional datasets, supervised learning algorithms can help in relating brain images to behavioral or clinical observations and unsupervised learning can uncover hidden structures/patterns in images. Bringing together artificial intelligence (AI) experts as well as medical practitioners, these chapters cover the majority of neuro problems that use neuroimaging for diagnosis, along with case studies and directions for future research.

Deep Brain Stimulation addresses the practical tips required to program and manage deep brain stimulation devices in the clinic. The number of deep brain stimulation devices worldwide will soon eclipse 200,000 and is an approved surgical treatment for medically refractory neurological movement disorders such as Parkinson disease, tremors, and dystonia. It is, therefore, inevitable that clinicians and nurses will require the necessary tools, and exemplary real-life cases, to manage these complex patients. This book offers a case-based approach to common and uncommon neurologic problems related to deep brain stimulator problems. Each case is a clinical pearl, accompanied by a discussion as well as practical tips to improve patient management.
