Deep learning (DL), mainly composed of deep and complex neural networks such as recurrent network and convolutional network, is an emerging research branch in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. DL revolution has a far-reaching impact on all scientific disciplines and every corner of our lives. With continuing technological advances, marine science is entering into the big data era with the exponential growth of information. DL is an effective means of harnessing the power of big data. Combined with unprecedented data from cameras, acoustic recorders, satellite remote sensing, and large model outputs, DL enables scientists to solve complex problems in biology, ecosystems, climate, energy, as well as physical and chemical interactions. Although DL has made great strides, it is still only beginning to emerge in many fields of marine science, especially towards representative applications and best practices for the automatic analysis of marine organisms and marine environments. DL in nowadays' marine science mainly leverages cutting-edge techniques of deep neural networks and massive data which collected by in-situ optical or acoustic imaging sensors for underwater applications, such as plankton classification and coral reef detection. This research topic aims to expand the applications of marine science to cover all aspects of detection, classification, segmentation, localization, and density estimation of marine objects, organisms, and phenomena.

Ocean Observation Based On Underwater Acoustic Technology Volume Ii written by Xuebo Zhang and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-02 with Science categories.

Since the sound wave is the only information carrier that can propagate long distances in the ocean, underwater acoustic technology based on sound waves undoubtedly plays an important role in ocean observation. The development of underwater acoustic technology requires the support of various underwater acoustic sensors and signal processing techniques. The function of an underwater acoustic sensor is to conduct the conversion between an underwater acoustic signal and an electric signal. Their performance directly determines the quality of underwater acoustic equipment. However, the harsh environment such as high pressure, high temperature, and highly corrosive fluids, as well as different requirements such as low frequency, broad bandwidth, high power, and deep water, often affect the physical properties of materials and structural performance of transducers, which deteriorates the transducer performance. Due to the lack of comprehensive research on key techniques including material physical properties and interfacial bond properties, the reliability of structural components is often seriously affected by environmental conditions, which may lead to major performance degradation or even failure with the device performance. Therefore, it is challenging for the transducer design to balance the acoustic performance and the device's stability.

Marine ecosystems are open and dissipative systems that rely on an external energy source – light – for their sustenance. The magnitude of the light flux and the spectral quality of the light field (which determines colour) determine the rate of marine photosynthesis by phytoplankton in the ocean, and the types of phytoplankton communities that flourish in different parts of the ocean and in different seasons. Ocean colour – determined by the spectral quality of light scattered out of the sea and back into the atmosphere – can be monitored using satellite sensors, and used to map the distribution of the major phytoplankton pigment, chlorophyll-a, at global scales. Remote sensing of ocean colour, first realised in 1977, has revolutionised the field of biological oceanography. Over the years, the quality of satellite products has continued to improve, and the range of products available has extended beyond chlorophyll concentration to encompass many variables of interest to biological oceanography and ocean biogeochemistry. However, it is well recognized that satellite observations have to be integrated with, and complemented by, field measurements and modelling, to obtain the full picture. The research topic proposed will cover a range of recent developments in ocean colour remote sensing and allied fields.

Managing Deep Sea And Open Ocean Ecosystems At Ocean Basin Scale Volume 2 written by J. Murray Roberts and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-07 with Science categories.

This is the second issue of the Research Topic: Managing Deep-sea and Open Ocean Ecosystems at Ocean Basin Scale The original article collection can be found here: Managing Deep-sea Ecosystems at Ocean Basin Scale - Volume 1 Drawing upon work by the ATLAS (2016-20) and iAtlantic (2019-23) projects this second volume Research Topic explores recent findings and themes emerging as the marine research and management communities embrace assessments of ecosystem time series, connectivity, biogeography and function at ocean basin scale. Research and policy development at this scale has been driven by the realization that multiple interacting stressors created by climate change and anthropogenic impacts are rapidly altering marine ecosystems at the same time as governments seek to promote increased economic output from the marine environment. This broad context sets the considerable challenge and opportunity for marine science, industry, management and policy to shape the frameworks through which this sustainable economic ‘Blue Growth’ can be achieved. Studies built upon new discoveries from poorly-understood deep ocean ecosystems (e.g. coral, sponge, vent & chemosynthetic fauna) are highlighting the opportunities for the scientific community to create a new evidence base for long-term management. For example, advances in deep-sea exploration technology, oceanographic data availability, modeling resolution and a better understanding of larval biology and dispersal are fostering more interdisciplinary partnerships between physicists and biologists to model ecosystem connectivity. These connectivity analyses can now be ground-truthed by population genetic approaches built on datasets developed from next-generation sequencing technologies (e.g. RADseq, RADTag, 2bRAD) fostering new understanding of marine ecosystem connectivity.
