Deep maps are finely detailed, multimedia depictions of a place and the people, buildings, objects, flora, and fauna that exist within it and which are inseparable from the activities of everyday life. These depictions may encompass the beliefs, desires, hopes, and fears of residents and help show what ties one place to another. A deep map is a way to engage evidence within its spatio-temporal context and to provide a platform for a spatially-embedded argument. The essays in this book investigate deep mapping and the spatial narratives that stem from it. The authors come from a variety of disciplines: history, religious studies, geography and geographic information science, and computer science. Each applies the concepts of space, time, and place to problems central to an understanding of society and culture, employing deep maps to reveal the confluence of actions and evidence and to trace paths of intellectual exploration by making use of a new creative space that is visual, structurally open, multi-media, and multi-layered.

Taking its name from the subtitle of William Least Heat-Moon's PrairyErth (a deep map), the "deep-map" form of nonfiction and environmental writing defines an innovative and stratigraphic literary genre. Proposing that its roots can be found in Great Plains nonfiction writing, Susan Naramore Maher explores the many facets of this vital form of critique, exploration, and celebration that weaves together such elements of narrative as natural history, cultural history, geography, memoir, and intertextuality. Maher's Deep Map Country gives readers the first book-length study of the deep-map nonfiction of the Great Plains region, featuring writers as diverse as Julene Bair, Sharon Butala, Loren Eiseley, Don Gayton, Linda Hasselstrom, William Least Heat-Moon, John Janovy Jr., John McPhee, Kathleen Norris, and Wallace Stegner. Deep Map Country examines the many layers of storytelling woven into their essays: the deep time of geology and evolutionary biology; the cultural history of indigenous and settlement communities; the personal stories of encounters with this expansive terrain; the political and industrial stories that have affected the original biome and Plains economies; and the spiritual dimensions of the physical environment that press on everyday realities.

Making Deep Maps written by David J. Bodenhamer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-28 with Science categories.
This book explores how we create deep maps, delving into the development of methods and approaches that move beyond standard two-dimensional cartography. Deep mapping offers a more detailed exploration of the world we inhabit. Moving from concept to practice, this book addresses how we make deep maps. It explores what methods are available, what technologies and approaches are favorable when designing deep maps, and what lessons assist the practitioner during their construction. This book aims to create an open-ended way in which to understand complex problems through multiple perspectives, while providing a means to represent the physical properties of the real world and to respond to the needs of contemporary scholarship. With contributions from leading experts in the spatial humanities, chapters focus on the linked layers of quantitative and qualitative data, maps, photographs, images, and sound that offer a dynamic view of past and present worlds. This innovative book is the first to offer these insights on the construction of deep maps. It will be a key point of reference for students and scholars in the digital and spatial humanities, geographers, cartographers, and computer scientists who work on spatiality, sensory experience, and perceptual learning.

Artistic Approaches To Cultural Mapping written by Nancy Duxbury and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-03 with Science categories.
Making space for imagination can shift research and community planning from a reflective stance to a "future forming" orientation and practice. Cultural mapping is an emerging discourse of collaborative, community-based inquiry and advocacy. This book looks at artistic approaches to cultural mapping, focusing on imaginative cartography. It emphasizes the importance of creative process that engages with the "felt sense" of community experiences, an element often missing from conventional mapping practices. International artistic contributions in this book reveal the creative research practices and languages of artists, a prerequisite to understanding the multi-modal interface of cultural mapping. The book examines how contemporary artistic approaches can challenge conventional asset mapping by animating and honouring the local, giving voice and definition to the vernacular, or recognizing the notion of place as inhabited by story and history. It explores the processes of seeing and listening and the importance of the aesthetic as a key component of community self-expression and self-representation. Innovative contributions in this book champion inclusion and experimentation, expose unacknowledged power relations, and catalyze identity formation, through multiple modes of artistic representation and performance. It will be a valuable resource for individuals involved with creative research methods, performance, and cultural mapping as well as social and urban planning.

A vivid tour of the Earth's last frontier, a remote and mysterious realm that nonetheless lies close to the heart of even the most land-locked reader. The sea covers seven-tenths of the Earth, but we have mapped only a small percentage of it. The sea contains millions of species of animals and plants, but we have identified only a few thousand of them. The sea controls our planet's climate, but we do not really understand how. The sea is still the frontier, and yet it seems so familiar that we sometimes forget how little we know about it. Just as we are poised on the verge of exploiting the sea on an unprecedented scale—mining it, fertilizing it, fishing it out—this book reminds us of how much we have yet to learn. More than that, it chronicles the knowledge explosion that has transformed our view of the sea in just the past few decades, and made it a far more interesting and accessible place. From the Big Bang to that far-off future time, two billion years from now, when our planet will be a waterless rock; from the lush crowds of life at seafloor hot springs to the invisible, jewel-like plants that float at the sea surface; from the restless shifting of the tectonic plates to the majestic sweep of the ocean currents, Kunzig's clear and lyrical prose transports us to the ends of the Earth. Originally published in hardcover as The Restless Sea.

Deep Mapping Lough Boora Sculpture Park written by Tim Collins and has been published by Offaly County Council this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-17 with Art categories.
Lough Boora Sculpture Park has been developed on cutaway bogs. The work reveals how art can help to rebuild a relationship between people, place and non-human others. There is one more creative impulse, an agency that is at the heart of this matter, sphagnum – peat moss. We have collections of moss in glass jars filled with water next to our studio window. Sphagnum grows noticeably taller and denser in this artificial environment. I cannot believe the strength of such a flimsy thing, it can rise above the water as it moves towards the light. On any sunny day numerous small bubbles come out from the translucent leaves. Tiny insects are swimming in and around the plants. Bog lands are not wastelands. Raised bogs are as monumental and significant as redwood forests. Sphagnum is an extraordinary living thing. It is small, fragile but at the same time resilient, never harmful. Always close to water it is absorbent, spongy to walk on. Softness is the essence of the plant. Art can be a response to small things. Use your sensibility to listen to the breath of the bog. Imagine the sight and sound as the spore capsules explode. Feel the energy as the air is filled with an infinity of spores, another cycle begins. Reiko Goto Collins
