The work at hand names some 2,500 planters who played a part in defending and securing the Plantation of Ulster during the 1641 rebellion and the Williamite War of 1688-1691. As such, this book is divided into two alphabetically arranged lists. The first and smaller of the two lists, "Muster Roll of Garrison in the City of Londonderry, 1642-1643," identifies 905 men in 9 foot companies who defended Derry's walls during the siege of 1641/1642. The second list concerns the Ulstermen who defended Londonderry against the Jacobite opposition to William of Orange in Ireland. Mr. Mitchell's main source in this instance is William R. Young's "Fighters of Derry--Their Deeds and Descendants . . . 1688-1691."

In Transgenerational Colonialism, Karel James Bouse offers an alternative and holistic model for the analysis of colonialism and its effects on humanity. Using the current anti-colonialist struggle in Northern Ireland as a representative case study, Bouse illustrates her theoretical model by tracing the onset of trauma to the eventual overcoming period, evidenced by a cultural renaissance, a reconstruction of collective positive identity, and political self-determination. This book is recommended for students and scholars of psychology, history, political science, and cultural studies, as well as those interested in the cyclical nature of colonial experience.

The Siege of Derry (1688-9) is the key political myth in Loyalist culture. This study looks at the Siege, reconstructing the ways in which the defence of Derry has been commemorated and interpreted over the last 300 years. Celebrated by historians, artists, poets and preachers, re-enacted in anniversary demonstrations and parades, the Siege provides a unique insight into the mixture of triumphalism and insecurity that lies behind the slogan 'No Surrender!'

The eighteenth century is in many ways the most problematic era in Irish history. Traditionally, the years from 1700 to 1775 have been short-changed by historians, who have concentrated overwhelmingly on the last quarter of the period. Professor Ian McBride's survey, the fourth in the New Gill History of Ireland series, seeks to correct that balance. At the same time it provides an accessible and fresh account of the bloody rebellion of 1798, the subject of so much controversy. The eighteenth century was the heyday of the Protestant Ascendancy. Professor McBride explores the mental world of Protestant patriots from Molyneux and Swift to Grattan and Tone. Uniquely, however, McBride also offers a history of the eighteenth century in which Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter all receive due attention. One of the greatest advances in recent historiography has been the recovery of Catholic attitudes during the zenith of the Protestant Ascendancy. Professor McBride's Eighteenth-Century Ireland insists on the continuity of Catholic politics and traditions throughout the century so that the nationalist explosion in the 1790s appears not as a sudden earthquake, but as the culmination of long-standing religious and social tensions. McBride also suggests a new interpretation of the penal laws, in which themes of religious persecution and toleration are situated in their European context. This holistic survey cuts through the clichés and lazy thinking that have characterised our understanding of the eighteenth century. It sets a template for future understanding of that time. Eighteenth-Century Ireland: Table of Contents Introduction Part I. Horizons - English Difficulties and Irish Opportunities - The Irish Enlightenment and its Enemies - Ireland and the Ancien Régime Part II.
