This volume analyzes crises in International Relations (IR) in an innovative way. In his book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century the historian Yuval Noah Harrari wrote that man had the possibility to conquer the world precisely because he could create fictional stories and believe in them. People created more and more complex stories about themselves that served and continue to serve, according to the professor of the University of Jerusalem, building unity, social harmony and gaining power. A narrative about past, in which memory fragmentation and victimisation play a large role, may be a temptation to instrumentalise the past. This is especially true in relation to the events of the twentieth century, when a series of bloody war conflicts occurred. As shown in the following post-conference volume, today the wars of the past (World War I and World War II, Indian-Pakistani war) and current conflicts (Russo-Ukrainian war, war in Sudan or Nagorno-Karabakh) are also a catalyst for the process of instrumentalisation. This process can be analysed both at the level of the evolution of the language of conflict, including the erosion of the values of democratic dialogue, and the use of specific means of commemorating the past (monuments, museums, the Internet).

This book centres refugees and asylum seekers as agents of global politics, broadening our thinking about political agency beyond statism, citizenship, and organized political protest. Arguing that to understand forced migration, we must understand the construction of refugees as individual human subjects and how subconscious ideas about refugees influence daily practices and policies, the author studies how refugees make meaning about themselves. Forced migration is a key formative phenomenon of international politics but debates habitually discuss displacement only as an abstract number, economic challenge, or security issue. This volume shifts attention to the individual human subjects as overlooked agents of international relations. To this end, the book rethinks individual subjects altogether and develops a comprehensive practice-theoretical framework of subject construction. Through extensive ethnographic data generated with refugees in Germany and Austria, the author reveals how refugees are depoliticized, and how they combat this using creativity, humour, and intercultural resources. This volume highlights people’s agency despite being subjected to powerful ideas and mechanisms. The book develops a novel framework for the analysis of global crises. It differentiates crises on three dimensions: permanent, recurring and ephemeral crises. This conceptualization allows us to analyze global crises not only in their immediate environment, but makes it possible to understand them in the broader context of social instability. The approach revolves around the terminology of discursive dislocation which provides fundamental insights into diverse forms of social instability. A multidimensional conceptualization of dislocation is advanced which informs the differentiation of global crises. Furthermore, a methodological toolkit is developed and tailored to the theoretical framework, which makes it possible to utilize the book both theoretically and methodologically for the analysis of manifold forms of global crises. The book also provides a comprehensive analysis of the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States under Donald Trump. Making use of the aforementioned methodology, it presents a hands-on illustration of how the multidimensional framework can be utilized for practical analyses. The analysis reveals how the construction of the Covid-19 pandemic is embedded in the historically ingrained self-portrayal of the United States, and how crisis responses are invoked to serve particular socio-political purposes in retaining an established vision of the United States.

Christian communities are deeply rooted in the Middle East, starting their witness since the first centuries of Christianity. The last hundred years of Middle East Christianity’s history went through a series of profound crises.
