The conflict between the natural sciences and Christian theology has been going on for centuries. Recent advances in the fields of evolutionary biology, behavioral genetics, and neuroscience have intensified this conflict, particularly in relation to origins, the fall, and sin. These debates are crucial to our understanding of human sinfulness and necessarily involve the doctrine of salvation. Theistic evolutionists have labored hard to resolve these tensions between science and faith, but Hans Madueme argues that the majority of their proposals do injustice both to biblical teaching and to long-standing doctrines held by the mainstream Christian tradition. In this major contribution to the field of science and religion, Madueme demonstrates that the classical notion of sin reflected in Scripture, the creeds, and tradition offers the most compelling and theologically coherent account of the human condition. He answers pressing challenges from the physical sciences on both methodological and substantive levels. Scholars, pastors, students, and interested lay readers will profit from interacting with the arguments presented here.

Thomas Aquinas on the Cardinal Virtues provides essential passages from Thomas's treatment of the cardinal virtues in the Summa theologiae, edited and explained for classroom use or the independent reader. Arranged for beginners, this book contains passages from the Summa theologiae of great historical import, contemporary relevance, or intrinsic interest combined with abundant footnotes aiding the modern reader. Each individual article is arranged so that the question, e.g. “Is capital punishment moral?” is followed directed by Thomas’s answer. Then the first objection is raised, followed immediately by Thomas’s response, the second objection is raised and then Thomas answers it, and so forth. The abundant footnotes help first time readers navigate key theological and philosophical terms which may be unfamiliar. In addition, the notes provide biographical information about key authors cited by Thomas, such as Tully, Vegetius, and Gregory the Great. The footnotes sometimes look back at the sources and philosophical roots of what Thomas teaches. Other notes note how authors after Aquinas including theologians, church councils, and popes developed, synthesized, and sometimes rejected what Thomas teaches. In sum, this book seeks to illuminate Thomas’s teaching on the cardinal virtues such as a teacher might do in the classroom.

The thirteenth century Italian Dominican friar, Thomas Aquinas was a philosopher, theologian and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism. The foremost classical proponent of natural theology, Thomas had an immense influence on Western thought, as much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, especially in areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics and political theory. The cross remains the most familiar symbol of Christianity and the church, so common it is easy to forget it recalls one of the most vicious forms of execution devised. Perhaps an electric chair at the peak of our steeples would say to us what the cross said to the first believers. Why did Christ have to suffer in such a brutal death? Did Jesus die on a cross because God is angry and violent, or because we are angry and violent? How does the cross create the possibility of a new kind of humanity ready for a new kind of world? What does the cross have to say about racial, economic, gender, and other human divisions? How does the cross offer forgiveness and end our shame, thereby freeing us from the wounds life has inflicted on us? What lessons does the cross teach about sharing life in community with others? Very early in Christian history the idea of “The Pascal Mystery” entered the liturgy and thought of the church. Incorporating the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ into one broad act by which we are reconciled with God, the Passover (Pascha) Mystery identifies the execution of Jesus with the Passover Lamb rather than the lamb sacrificed as a sin offering on the Day of Atonement. The Passover Lamb represents the obedience to God which nourishes and sustains God’s people on their journey to freedom and wholeness.

Help From Heaven written by Randal A. Wiedemann and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-19 with Religion categories.
The theme in this book is that heaven is for those now alive. Instead of self-help, we need God-help. When Jesus prayed, “on earth as it is in heaven,” He was giving us a solution to earthly problems. In heaven, there are no burdens as we know them. There are no personality disorders, no interrelationship problems or feuds, no disease, no sense of tragic sadness. In fact, heaven is the blueprint for perfection in every aspect of life on earth. Without spoiling the punch line, this book is about receiving help from heaven in a way that will remove obstacles in your path so that you do not have to continually face the same problems over and over again. Only God can change our hearts and help us fix our problems at the deepest level. This change is quickened as we spend time in His presence and believe that God is able to overcome our problems. The challenge we have is waiting in His presence and believing. This book will give you tips on how to access help from heaven that is available for you right now. Your help from heaven can be instantaneous or it can take years. The time required for you to receive your help depends on you. Heaven is ready right now and Christ has done all that is required to set you free from your trouble. However, your problem may have taken years to develop. Getting out of it so that it doesn’t return to foil you the same way again may take some time too. What does that say? It says that we must never quit and never give up. In preparing to read this book, you may want to pray something like this: Lord God, I desire to enter Your presence. Please open the eyes of my heart and let Your love and truth penetrate my mind, body, soul, and spirit. May Your hand guide me and Your Spirit resonate within me as I read this book. Give me Your message and Your words. Thank You for interceding in my life with help from heaven. Amen.

Samuel Johnson S Lives Of The Poets written by Edward L. Tomarken and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-31 with Literary Criticism categories.
This open access book seeks to explain how the literary commentary of the Lives of the Poets speaks to us today because of its ethical goals. Edward Tomarken elucidates this element of Johnson’s literary criticism by using Ralph Cohen’s genre method, the topic of Chapter One, “Why Genre”. Chapters two to five address the most prevalent genres of the Lives: tragedy, metaphysical poetry, the epic, the pastoral elegy, and the mock epic. Chapter six considers the rise of literary criticism as a genre. Chapter Seven demonstrates how ethical genre criticism relates literature to life. And the final chapter explains why, although Johnson considers ‘moral’ and ‘ethical’ as nearly interchangeable terms, Tomarken prefers ‘ethical’ because it relates genre criticism to present problems in literary and non-literary worlds.
