Defending Lincolnshire written by Mike Osborne and has been published by History Press Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Lincolnshire (England) categories.

In the 2000 years between standing on the northern edge of the Roman Empire and representing the West's response to the threat of nuclear war, historic Lincolnshire has been at the forefront of civil strife and in the front line of two world wars. Much of this military heritage is still visible in the landscape: Roman forts; medieval castles, fortified manors and moats; Victorian barracks and drill halls; military airfields; anti-invasion defenses; and, radar sites, bunkers and nuclear-attack monitoring posts. This book describes the various elements of Lincolnshire's rich military heritage, and places them in their historical and social contexts. From the strong houses of John of Gaunt's mistress, or Henry VI's Lord Treasurer, to the pseudo-fortresses of the Victorian Army; and, from the camps of Kitchener's New Army and the landing-grounds of the anti-Zeppelin fighter aircraft in one world war, to the pillboxes of the 1940 anti-invasion defences and the airfields of the RAF, from which were launched countless sorties both on land and sea against a Continental enemy, in another.

1066 written by David Armine Howarth and has been published by New York : Viking Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with History categories.

It is one of the most important dates in the history of the Western world: 1066, the year William the Conqueror defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings and changed England and the English forever. Yet the events leading to-and following-this turning point in history are shrouded in mystery and distorted by the biased accounts written by a subjugated people, and many believe it was the English who ultimately won, since the Normans became assimilated into the English way of life. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary sources, David Howarth gives us memorable portraits of the leading characters and their motivations. At the same time he enables us to see the events of that year from the viewpoint of common Englishmen, and along the way we learn how they lived, worked, fought, and died-and how they perceived from their isolated shires the overthrow of their world. Bartolom De Las Casas And The Defense Of Amerindian Rights written by Lawrence A. Clayton and has been published by Atlantic Crossings this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"This is a reader devoted to the life and writings of Bartolomé de las Casas (1485-1566), and the effects of his legacy on the age of the Encounter when Europeans-principally but not exclusively Spaniards-conquered the Americas. Las Casas is arguably the most important figure of the Encounter Age after Christopher Columbus, and Las Casas is well known to those who teach Western civilization, various survey histories of Spain and Latin America, and Atlantic history. He is known principally as the author of the "Black Legend," as well as the "protector" of American Indians. He was one of the pioneers of the human rights movement, and a Christian activist who invoked Biblical scripture to interpret what was right and wrong in the great age of the Encounter. He was also one of the first and most thorough chroniclers of the conquest, and a biographer who saved the diary of Columbus's first voyage for posterity through his History of the Indies, for the journal of that voyage was lost. He was also an innovator in political theory and a proto-ethnographer, and his contributions in geography, philosophy, and literature are no less significant. That he was also crusty, self-righteous, judgmental, given to gross exaggerations, and not a very loving Christian adds the very human dimension of failure to his character. This reader provides the most wide-ranging, and concise anthology of Las Casas' writings, in translation, ever made available. It contains not only excerpts from his most well-known texts, but also his writings on political philosophy and law, which are largely unavailable. Many of these selections have never been translated into English and they mostly address these under-appreciated aspects of his thought. As such, this volume presents Las Casas as a more comprehensive and systematic philosophical and legal thinker than he is given credit. The introduction puts these writings into a synthetic whole by biographically tracing his indigenous advocacy throughout his career"--

Juan de Solorzano Pereira (1575-1654) was a lawyer who spent eighteen years as a judge in Peru before returning to Spain to serve on the Councils of Castile and of the Indies. Considered one of the finest lawyers in Spain, his work, De Indiarum Jure, was the most sophisticated defense of the Spanish conquest of the Americas ever written, and he was widely cited in Europe and the Americas until the early nineteenth century. His work, and that of the Spanish School of international law theorists generally, is often seen as leading to Hugo Grotius and modern international law. However, as James Muldoon shows, the De Indiarum Jure represents the fullest development of a medieval Catholic theory of international order that provided an alternative to the Grotian theory.
