The concept of poesie critique - poetry that possesses both a poetic and a critical function - has an extensive history in modern literature. Written in response to another work of art, be it a painting, a film, a poem, or a piece of music, the critical poem comments on the latter in various ways but refuses to abandon its poetic mission. Marvelous Encounters examines surrealist poets writing in French, Spanish, and Catalan who experimented with this intriguing genre. The first three chapters are concerned with the French surrealists, who began to cultivate critical poetry toward the end of World War I. Chapter 2 considers how Louis Aragon and Philippe Soupault appropriated the critical poem, as they reviewed books of poetry and films starring Charlie Chaplin. Chapter 3, which examines how Benjamin Peret and Paul Eluard conceived of critical poetry, analyzes their response to poems by Tristan Tzara and paintings by Giorgio de Chirico and Joan Miro. Chapter 4 is devoted entirely to Andre Breton.

The book explores novels, essays and poetry published by Spanish writers in response to the global economic crisis that began in 2008. Spain has been experiencing the crisis in a particularly painful way, and the artistic response to these traumatic events has been powerful and abundant. The literature of the crisis is pointing to the probability that the crisis is not a temporary problem that will be resolved once and for all if correct economic measures are taken. To the contrary, there is every reason to believe that the losses in long-term employment, the growing precariousness of work, the increased economic insecurity, the citizens' disillusionment with the capacity of democratic governments to withstand the pressures of global capital, the erosion of the welfare state, and the explosive growth in inequality that we associate with the crisis are not likely to be reversed. Spanish artists are exploring the reasons behind Spain's particularly painful experience of the crisis and, at the same time, are placing the suffering that the crisis is causing in Spain within the context of global developments that are ensuring its durability. Joan B. Pastor Aicart (Beneixama, 1849-1917) va ser metge rural i un escriptor molt prolífic, tant en castellà com en valencià. Si bé ha estat conegut com a poeta, la seua obra abraça tot tipus de gèneres literaris: assaig, teatre, articles de premsa, crítica literària, narrativa curta, etc. Fins ara, la seua figura ha passat desapercebuda dins del moviment de la Renaixença valenciana, tot i ser l'autor més premiat al llarg dels territoris de parla catalana durant aquells anys de renaixement lingüístic. El caràcter conservador i religiós d'una bona part de la seua obra i el seu tarannà social discret, que el va fer viure lluny de la capital i sempre més atent al treball que no a l'aparició en els cenacles literaris de l'època, han mantingut probablement oculta la importància dels seus escrits. Aquest llibre, que intenta ser una reconstrucció de la seua biografia intel·lectual, presenta també una breu selecció dels seus textos més rellevants.
