Trata-se de um livro, escrito em latim e nunca traduzido, de polémica científica, da autoria do conhecido médico e botânico italiano Pietro Andrea Mattioli, publicado em 1558 contra o seu colega português Amato Lusitano. Tanto Mattioli como Amato integram-se naquele grupo humano que é de uso designar-se por “médicos humanistas.” A obra agora apresentada representa a violentíssima reação do médico e botânico senense a algumas alusões e críticas, em tom urbano e comedido, esparzidas pelo sábio português nas suas celebradas in Dioscoridis enarrationes, publicadas pela 1ª vez em 1553, em Veneza. Contestando a fundamentação científica das retificações do colega lusitano, Mattioli apela frequentemente para a argumentação ad hominem, procurando diminuir os quilates do saber de Amato mediante vários processos de depreciação, que vão desde a deturpação do nome (Amatus intencionalmente confundido com a palavra grega que significa “sandeu, louco”) até à alusão achincalhante à procedência hebraica da linhagem do nosso compatriota. A obra é valiosa para ajuizarmos de certas práticas pseudo-científicas então correntes, hoje infelizmente ainda não de todo desaparecidas, e sobretudo pelo conteúdo científico, que, mediante abundantes anotações e comentários sobretudo botânicos, contribuirá como subsídio valioso para um melhor conhecimento da chamada “matéria médica” nos meados do século XVI.
