What is "urban"? How can it be described and contextualised? How is it used in theory and practice? Urban processes feature in key international policy and practice discourses. They are at the core of research agendas across traditional academic disciplines and emerging interdisciplinary fields. However, the concept of "the urban" remains highly contested, both as material reality and imaginary construct. The urban remains imprecisely defined. Defining the Urban is an indispensable guide for the urban transdisciplinary thinker and practitioner. Parts I and II focus on how "Academic Disciplines" and "Professional Practices," respectively, understand and engage with the urban. Included, among others, are Architecture, Ecology, Governance and Sociology. Part III, "Emerging Approaches," outlines how elements from theory and practice combine to form transdisciplinary tools and perspectives. Written by eminent experts in their respective fields, Defining the Urban provides a stepping stone for the development of a common language—a shared ontology—in the disjointed fields of urban research and practice. It is a comprehensive and accessible resource for anyone with an interest in understanding how urban scholars and practitioners can work together on this complex theme.

Twenty years is a long time in the life of a science. While the historical roots of psychology have not changed since the first edition of this book, some of the offshoots of the various theories and systems discussed have been crit ically reexamined and have undergone far-reaching modifications. New and bold research has led to a broadening of perspectives, and recent devel opments in several areas required a considerable amount of rewriting. I have been fortunate in the last fifteen years to have worked with about 2,000 psychologists and other behavioral scientists who contributed to several collected volumes I have edited. As the editor-in-chief of the In ternational Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Neurol ogy, I have had the privilege of reading, scrutinizing, and editing the work of 1,500 experts in psychology and related disciplines. In addition, I have written several books and monographs and over one hundred scientific papers. Armed with all that experience, I have carefully examined the pages of the first edition. Chapter 8 required substantial rewriting and several new sections have been added to other chapters: "Current Soviet Psychol ogy" (Chapter 2, Section 7); "New Ideas on Purposivism" (Chapter 5, Sec tion 4); "Recent Developments in the Sociological School of Psychoanalysis" (Chapter 9, Section 4); and "Present Status of Gestalt Psychology" (Chapter 12, Section 4). Chapter 15 was omitted, and two new chapters were added: Chapter 14 ("Humanistic Psychology") and Chapter 16 ("Selected Research Areas").

The book then moves through key contemporary lines of research in the field, contrasting models from perception and cognition, such as those of Gibson and Brunswick, with major social psychological approaches as represented by Lewin, Barker and others. Residential treatment can be a path to healing or a revolving door. Make the program you're involved with as effective as possible! For a number of years, many mental health professionals, public interest groups, and child advocates have been pressing for the use of increasingly time-limited (short-term) models of residential treatment and psychotherapy for children and adolescents. Yet the children who are most often referred for residential care are clearly more emotionally disturbed than in years past. They have more extensive backgrounds of social failure and often have dysfunctional or barely existent families. The Forsaken Child confronts this dilemma. These essays on the delivery of group care and individual treatment services for young people present an argument for the preservation of thoughtful, humanistic forms of residential treatment. In The Forsaken Child: Essays on Group Care and Individual Therapy, you'll find well-thought-out discussions of: Anna Freud's altruistic devotion to providing group care for the infant and child victims of World War I bombings in London, with descriptions of important parallels between her observations of the young war victims in her care and the experiences of abandoned, neglected, and abused children in American cities today the historical foundations of milieu treatment and an examination of persisting issues the humane concerns of the early founders of residential care vs. the present-day objectivist climate a long-term case study of a young child in residential care highlighting a number of clinical issues which contraindicate the use of either brief therapy techniques or short-term group care how an interactive, social-constructionist treatment approach helped an adolescent boy in residential care achieve psychological growth and a sense of optimism about the future The Forsaken Child will be of significant help to residential facility administrators in longer-range program planning and to social workers and other clinicians who cope with the daily clinical issues that arise in group and individual treatment settings.

The nineteen interdisciplinary essays assembled in WORD AND MUSIC STUDIES I were first presented in 1997 at the founding conference of the International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA) in Graz, Austria. Diverse in subject matter, theoretical orientation, critical approach, and interpretive strategy, they share a keen scholarly interest in contemporary word-music reflection. Registering the impact of cultural studies on word-music relations, as manifested in the 'new musicology' and other 'historicist' approaches, the volume aims to assess the entire field of word and music studies, to define its subject, objectives, and methodology and to describe the field's state of the art. Within the broader context of generic, structural, performative, and ideological considerations concerning the manifold interrelations between literature and music, contributors explore wide-ranging topics, such as the vexing question of terminology (e.g. 'word and music', 'melopoetics', 'interart', 'intermedial', 'transmedial'); inquiry into the meaning, narrative potential, and verbalization of music; analysis of texted music (the Lied and opera) and instrumental music; and discussion of individual issues (e.g. 'ekphrasis', 'musicalization of fiction', 'word music', and 'verbal music') and interart loanwords (e.g. 'narrativity', 'counterpoint', and 'leitmotif').

Proceedings of the April 1997 seminar. The designation strong fields applies to external static magnetic and/or electric fields that are sufficiently intense to cause alterations in atomic or molecular structure and dynamics. Thirty-eight contributions discuss the behavior and properties of atoms in strong static fields, the fundamental aspects and electronic structure of molecules in strong magnetic fields, the dynamics and aspects of chaos in highly excited Rydberg atoms in external fields, matter in the atmosphere of astrophysical objects (white dwarfs, neutron stars), and quantum nanostructures in strong magnetic fields. Contributors hail from such disparate fields as atomic and molecular physics, theoretical chemistry, and astrophysics. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
