Bogen falder i fire hoveddele. Først gøres der rede for bogens overordnede sprogsyn, nemlig at sprog- og kommunikationsmodeller er en form for tilværelsesmodeller. Derfor betragtes det sproglige curriculum som et væsentligt aspekt af socialiseringen. Hvilke kommunikations- og tilværelsesmodeller er det, der har præget den moderne danske sprogundervisning, og hvad er konsekvenserne? Som alternativ til disse modeller introduceres forskellige versioner af økologisk sprogvidenskab med særlig vægt på den danske dialektiske skoledannelse inden for dette felt. Som det fjerde hovedelement i bogen gives der nogle eksemplariske analyser af autentiske dialoger. Analyseredskaberne hertil er netop hentet hos den danske dialektiske sprogteori, og formålet er at anvise en metode til brug for analyser af levende sprog – levende tekster i deres kulturelle sammenhæng, herunder dialogerne i klasseværelset. Bogen henvender sig først og fremmest til sprogundervisere på alle niveauer af uddannelsessystemet, men også til studerende på alle uddannelser, hvor refleksioner over sproget har en plads.

A Grammar of Eton is the first description of the Cameroonian Bantu language Eton. It is also one of the few complete descriptions of a North-western Bantu language. The complex tonology of Eton is carefully analysed and presented in a simple and consistent descriptive framework, which permits the reader to keep track of Eton's many tonal morphemes. Phonologists will be especially interested in the analysis of stem initial prominence, which manifests itself in a number of logically independent phenomena, including length of the onset consonant, phonotactic skewing and number of tonal attachment sites. Typologists and Africanists working on morphosyntax will find useful analyses of, among others, gender and agreement; tense, aspect, mood and negation; and verbal derivation. They will encounter many morphosyntactic differences between Eton and the better known Eastern and Southern Bantu languages, often due to evolutions shaped by maximality constraints on stems. The chapters on clause structure and complex constructions provide data hardly found in sources on the languages of the region, including descriptions of non-verbal clauses, focus, quasi-auxiliaries and adverbial clauses.

All languages have demonstratives, but their form, meaning and use vary tremendously across the languages of the world. This book presents the first large-scale analysis of demonstratives from a cross-linguistic and diachronic perspective. It is based on a representative sample of 85 languages. The first part of the book analyzes demonstratives from a synchronic point of view, examining their morphological structures, semantic features, syntactic functions, and pragmatic uses in spoken and written discourse. The second part concentrates on diachronic issues, in particular on the development of demonstratives into grammatical markers. Across languages demonstratives provide a frequent historical source for definite articles, relative and third person pronouns, nonverbal copulas, sentence connectives, directional preverbs, focus markers, expletives, and many other grammatical markers. The book describes the different mechanisms by which demonstratives grammaticalize and argues that the evolution of grammatical markers from demonstratives is crucially distinct from other cases of grammaticalization.

In this work, Ken Safir develops a comprehensive theory on the role of anaphora in syntax. First, he contends that the complementary distribution of forms that support the anaphoric readings is not accidental, contrary to most current thinking, but rather should be derived from a principle, one that he proposes in the form of an algorithm. Although the term implicitness is ubiquitous in the pragmatic scholarship, it has rarely constituted the focus of attention per se. This book aims to help crystallize the concept of implicitness by defining its linguistic boundaries, as well as specifying and exploring its different communicative manifestations.
