The Global Lives Of Things written by Anne Gerritsen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-19 with History categories.

The Global Lives of Things considers the ways in which ‘things’, ranging from commodities to works of art and precious materials, participated in the shaping of global connections in the period 1400-1800. By focusing on the material exchange between Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia, this volume traces the movements of objects through human networks of commerce, colonialism and consumption. It argues that material objects mediated between the forces of global economic exchange and the constantly changing identities of individuals, as they were drawn into global circuits. It proposes a reconceptualization of early modern global history in the light of its material culture by asking the question: what can we learn about the early modern world by studying its objects? This exciting new collection draws together the latest scholarship in the study of material culture and offers students a critique and explanation of the notion of commodity and a reinterpretation of the meaning of exchange. It engages with the concepts of ‘proto-globalization’, ‘the first global age’ and ‘commodities/consumption’. Divided into three parts, the volume considers in Part One, Objects of Global Knowledge, in Part Two, Objects of Global Connections, and finally, in Part Three, Objects of Global Consumption. The collection concludes with afterwords from three of the leading historians in the field, Maxine Berg, Suraiya Faroqhi and Paula Findlen, who offer their critical view of the methodologies and themes considered in the book and place its arguments within the wider field of scholarship. Extensively illustrated, and with chapters examining case studies from Northern Europe to China and Australia, this book will be essential reading for students of global history.

Fired Clay in Four Porcelain Clusters examines how energy use in the ceramics-making industry has evolved as a result of technological advancements and changing social norms and ideas in environmental conservation. Three main research themes are highlighted. First, the book examines how the evolving use of energy fuels has impacted the developmental history of the ceramics-making industry, especially with regard to productive output. The second theme focuses on energy use by networks of specialists and technicians in ceramics-making artistic clusters and how ceramicist communities in the world organize themselves institutionally to maximize resource-sharing. Third, at a cognitive level, the volume studies changes in production and design, environmental thinking, energy use, and aesthetic trends among ceramicists and consumers. The four cities or towns of Arita, Hong Kong, Jingdezhen, and Yingge are the settings for this research.

Design For Resilience written by Stuart Walker and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-01 with Design categories.

A beautifully written and illustrated framework for resilient design that is as pragmatic as it is inspiring, showing us not only how but why we should design differently. Design for Resilience is a timely, visionary map for creating restorative design that addresses humanity’s most critical issue: climate change. Our current wealth-oriented economic systems have resulted in gross disparities, war, refugee crises, and mass migrations that augur a bleak collective future. In this book, respected scholar Stuart Walker combines formidable research with practical examples to offer a hopeful, original, and transformative view of what resilient design looks like and how it can apply to all aspects of life, from personal objects to food to culture to business to recreation. Working at the intersection of theory, philosophy, history, environmentalism, and justice, Walker offers a fresh approach that decolonizes design thinking to fundamentally change the nature of design practice and how it shapes our lives, communities, and industries. Asking nothing short of the fundamental question “How should we live?,” Design for Resilience addresses the high-priority issues that concern governments, policymakers, designers, and people around the world who recognize that now, perhaps more than at any other time in human history, we need paradigmatic changes to create a future that lasts.

Central to this publication is the question as to which porcelain reached the Netherlands in the 17th century and how it was esteemed.Following the publication of several Dutch-language books connected to various exhibitions, all contributors to this book have long wanted to step beyond this limited scope with an international publication that contributed to the global research field of Chinese ceramics. Thirteen authors, both within and outside the Netherlands, elucidate the different sides of this topic. Although it ultimately is the history of how it was received – what was valued and why – a broad range of viewpoints have been chosen in order to answer those two questions adequately.--

Arlene Shechet: Meissen Recast is an exploration of the acclaimed sculptor's recent residency at the world-renowned German porcelain factory. The first porcelain manufacturers in Europe, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory has attracted artists and artisans from around the world since its establishment in the early 1700s. During her residency, Shechet gained access to all areas of the factory's production, learning their techniques, using their tools and familiarizing herself with their traditions. The astounding body of work that emerged from her time at Meissen, including adaptations and combinations of the original molds, both celebrates this history and subverts our very ideas of craftsmanship in porcelain. Meissen Recast stunningly captures a groundbreaking project. This book will change the way you view the traditions and future possibilities of decorative arts and their intersection with the realms of contemporary art.
