This book takes a fresh look at professional practice and professional education. In times of increased managerialism of academic teaching and a focus on graduate learning outcomes, it discusses possibilities to teach and learn otherwise. A deliberate professional is someone who consciously, thoughtfully and courageously makes choices about how to act and be in the practice world. A pedagogy of deliberateness is introduced that focuses on developing the following four characteristics of professionals: (1) deliberating on the complexity of practice and workplace cultures and environments; (2) understanding what is probable, possible and impossible in relation to existing and changing practices; (3) taking a deliberate stance in positioning oneself in practice as well as in making technical decisions; and (4) being aware of and responsible for the consequences of actions taken or actions not taken in relation to the ‘doing’, ‘saying’, ‘knowing’ and ‘relating’ in practice. Educating the deliberate professional is a comprehensive volume that carves out and explores a framework for a pedagogy of deliberateness that goes beyond educating reflective and deliberative practitioners. Climate change is a major obstacle facing the world today, impacting the environment and communities across the globe. With rising greenhouse gas emissions and subsequent rising surface temperatures, evidence shows that humans are the culprit. Ninety-seven percent of scientists agree that a global disaster is eminent if there are no changes (Cook et. al., 2016). Strategic action is needed to respond to climate change, and education and effective communication could be imperative to increasing public awareness and better decision-making. One tool used to increase education and communication is public forums. Public forums allow for deliberative public dialog, or deliberation, which provides individuals the opportunity to come together, discuss, and work through complex issues in an open format. According to recent studies, deliberation is an effective means of exploring issues and ultimately leading to potential solutions. Deliberation delivers new ideas and perspectives to individuals, and can help deepen general understanding of climate change. The effects of climate change are felt most by those not included in the conversation. This study evaluated the effectiveness of deliberative pedagogy as a means of climate change education by using a quasi-experimental design. The study involved 18 high school students. We hypothesized that deliberation through environmental issue forums (EIF) would promote knowledge, awareness, hope, and trust regarding climate change, leading to action and solutions. Program effectiveness was measured using pre-and post-test instruments. Results of the study suggest that deliberation as a means of education and communication can be an effective way to engage high school students with climate change. There was significant data indicating that knowledge, awareness, and hope regarding climate change increased after individuals participated in deliberation and the forum. These findings lead to recommendations of deliberation research that should consider examining wider demographics and various diverse, youth populations.

In this dissertation I explore the consequences of adopting a deliberative pedagogy, based on the study of one or two sample courses taught in 2018 at St. John's University. The project as a whole argues that the university should be an idea place for students to develop a sense of personal and political agency, and First Year Writing courses organized around deliberation allow students to learn to listen and reason with each other as individuals and as citizens. My first chapter defends the methodology of a humanistic idea of deliberation (a pedagogy not based in classroom drills or Standard English) and where I also worry that the soft and fuzzy notion of deliberation that I practice collides with the measurement of my students' "progress" on objective rubrics . My second chapter is a case study describing my students' performance in a deliberative classroom where some of my best students learn to practice deliberation but are unable to define it. My third chapter explains that a deliberative classroom helps overcome student anxiety and what I call "the eyes of deficiency"0́4rather than thinking of themselves as dull asteriods in a neoliberal universe, deliberation helps them see their power to influence and affect each other. In this chapter I argue that students do not need to go "outside" of class to find their political agency0́4deliberating and interacting with peers in the classroom itself is a genuine community. Building on my critique of the urge to push our students to find political awareness outside of the classroom, my final chapter is a sustained critique of the "false" face of deliberation found in social media like Facebook. Although many faculty have turned to using social media in class as a means of "making class real" I show the many ways that the Left's faith in the apparently democratic technologies of social media is well intentioned but terribly misplaced: our students' writing on social media is being harvested, sensationalized, and exploited against them, and as faculty we need to model practices of genuine listening, empathy, and respect.
